Arma 3 - How do I get started?

Hi I would like to pick the active player's brains please.

I loved playing ARMA back in the day but the community was very small, and it was a disappointment to be honest. ARMA 3 looks awesome, and I would love to get into it, but from the Steam page, it appears that it could be quite expensive initial outlay if we have to buy all the expansion packs:

Can someone please tell me what I will need to be able to play along with the local players, IE: what portions of the game I would need to be able to play.

Well it depends on which community / type of ArmA player you are or want to be.

E.G Our community doesn't use kit from any of the DLC's, but play ArmA in full real hardcore mode with loads of (free) mods. Other communities may be more casual but require you to have those DLC's because they rely heavily on the kit or maps that the afore mentioned DLC provides, so...

Oh and don't ever bother with the carts DLC, that's just a waste of money.

Hi HT, thanks for replying!

I always loved playing ARMA and Project Reality. And I can remember these types of games have quite a steep learning curve. Do you have any suggested resource I could use to get started on SA servers?
