ASDL - new here

We have been toying with the idea of having adsl (currently using dialup) and we find it would be better if we went for adsl as we are on the net most of the time.

But there is where the problem lies - we are unsure of the total cost it will cost us - afraid of the small print and all


Who would u recommend for the ADSL and the ISP...
 
I would say go for ADSL 192K, from the 1st it will cost R270 for the line I think.
Till 31st of OCtober go with Webafrica for the ISP, R199 for 30GB is the best option at the moment and the service is superb!

Total cost = R80(Telephone rental) + R270(ADSL Line) + R199(ISP) = R549

If you already have a telephone line subtract the R80 because you are already paying it.

You can upgrade to 384K/512K for free and only pay more for the package, R359 for 384K and R477 for 512K. Prices should be valid from 1st of August. If you downgrade the line you pay for it.

Monthly line Rental:
192K = R270
384K = R359
512K = R477

ISP:
Webafrica 30GB = R199
 
Note that the WebAfrica account is only a promotion, and will end on the 31st of October, for a more long term view look at either www.axxess.co.za or www.webafrica.co.za both (according to posts on this forum) seem to have excellent customer service, and their prices are very reasonable.

You need to choose your line speed, which you will pay Telkom for. and then the size of your monthly cap which you pay your service provider for.

If you use the internet just for a little light surfing and email then a 3gb or 5gb option is probably ok, if you're going to be gaming, file sharing, streaming audio/video, using voip excessively then somewhere between 10 and 30gb is probably a better choice.

192 is decent, 384 is obviously faster (2x), but im not sure if there is enough of a difference between the 384 and 512 to warrant the extra expense. At the end of the day it comes down to what you can afford. If your dialup bill is more then R600 every month then you might as well switch to 384 with a 10gig cap for approximately the same price and an infintiely better experience.

If you're going to download lots, then 15gb to 30gb will do for you.

If you are going to run out during the month, just upgrade your bandwidth...and if the connection just isn't fast enough (although for the first month you'll probably be blown away at how fast it is) you just upgrade your line speed, all within your budget that is

Don't go with a 5GB axxess account! For R24 less you can get a 30GB account and remember it is month to month so when prices change you can decide what you want to do.

Nothing against axxess, I have read many good things about them but at the moment Webafrica is the cheapest and also have great service.

very good advice but please note that the Webafrica 30gb isp is a promontion only for myadsl subscribers and is only valid until october. After october the price goes back up. I reccoment axxess as ISP www.axxess.co.za
 
Since all the accounts are month-by-month and you can change ISP at any time (making the "it's only a promotion" argument void), go with Web Africa. If after 3 months the promotion ends and another ISP has better pricing switch, otherwise stay with them. They have excellent service and are the cheapest around at the moment (other ISP's offer 3GB for the same price as their 30GB offering - R199).

As I said before till the 31st of October there is no better option than Webafrica. I think it is very likely that they will raise their prices to about the same as Axxess. The great thing about it is you don't have to be tied down to one ISP, you can switch anytime. Axxess is very good from what I have read.

In my opinion Webafrica, Axxess and Allyoucaneat are all great with very good service.
 
Ok - if one keeps on changing the isp's - that would mean you will have to change ur email addy everytime... and if yes - its gonna be a mission.

I strongly suggest you get yourself a gmail account and you won't have any problems if you need to change ISP.
 
eek i am getting more confused with this "german lang" lol... ok will pass this over to hubby - in the hope he will understand it more than me...

LOL Gmail is a web based free email account offered by Google. It means you signup, get yourself an email address which you can keep for life and you then won't have to worry if you ever change ISP. It also allows you to check your mail using Outlook/Outlook Express. You can only obtain an gmail account by invitation, so if you would like one, just ask us here - most of us have a gmail account.
 
Another thing about Gmail is you get around 2.3GB of storage space so you don't have to delete your email. I have the option of 5 emails with Webafrica but I simply use gmail.

As Vquest said if you want a Gmail account simply ask for one, I think there are about 3 threads already.

I think we have come to a decision.

We will go for the ADSL 192K (R270) and will just upgrade our ISP (xsinet) to R249. Bad or not.

Now the next question is the modem - what are the prices for a modem suitable for adsl....
