I've emailed Axxess, but they don't seem to understand what I'm asking, so I thought I'd try here.

I have 1Gb prepaid with axxess, but I'm going to be downloading a lot of windows updates etc this month, and I'm thinking of getting a cheaper non-prepaid Gig to do this with (saving my prepaid Gig for usage over the next few months).

So what I'm trying to find out is whether I can have two services active at the same time (1Gb basic, and 1Gb prepaid), and if so, how I specify which one it is that I currently want to use (i.e basic or prepaid). Do I get a new username and password to put into my router, or how does it work?

Seems like something people would want to do quite often - use a basic service, but keep prepaid as a backup.

the basic is a month-to-month account. If you've used up the bandwidth, then you can't browse any more.

the prepaid works almost the same as the basic, but you can buy extra prepaid vouchers any time.

Only one account can be in use at a time.

I wouldn't sign up for a basic, but rather buy a 3Gb prepaid voucher, and run windowsupdates till it's finished. At least unused bandwidth can be carried over.

Should you use up all the bandwidth, you can simply purchase another prepaid voucher (if needed, and if you want to).

Axxess are fast on the replies today :-)

Clarified it with them - in case anyone else is wondering, you get a different username and password for each service (basic, or prepaid). Basic accounts renew every month, so in this case since I only want a single month's worth of basic, I'd just order it and then cancel it so that I don't get charged next month for another 1Gb.

I'm generally working off prepaid because I don't really know what my average monthly usage will be yet - except that I know I'll be using about 1Gb this month on updates, so I might as well get a cheaper 1Gb basic.

You can have a look at their pay-as-you-go option.

Works a bit expensiver out for one Gb, but you can use up to 5Gb's without being capped.

This is ideal for people whose bandwidth usage fluctuate from month to month, one Gb the first month, then the next month 4Gb, then the month after that 2Gb...

But I'll stick with the prepaid option, much less hassle.

Why don't you use your pre-paid 1 Gig Axxess for international sites and get another Axxess LOCAL Bandwith pre-paid (R17 per GB ) and use that for South African sites only
Would work out much cheaper
EG. 1xGB Axxess = R70
1xGB Axxess=R17
TOTAL = R87

On how to set you PC up to be able to do this see previous postings:

BY ID13 "What works for some people, is to use an app called Routesentry. This enables you to Split your International usage from your Local usage by using 2 different accounts. Thus enabling you to "save" your precious International bandwidth."

I had the same problem previosly - ID13 once again helped me out see his post below

"I also have the Mega 100WR. What I did was:

1. Took the modem as I got it from telkom and logged into the interface on 10.0.0.2 and checked that the default Telkom Guest account was "loaded" or whatever you want to call it. Note, NOT your DO1 Account username and password.

2.Next I went to THIS site and followed the instructions of installing RASPPPOE and setting up the multiple accounts with different usernames&password combinations.

Now my router still connects to the default Telkom Guest account, and I am able to connect via different accounts without setting Anything on the router.

Yeah, I know about RouteSentry - but I wasn't asking about splitting local and international bandwidth, since we don't have local mirrors for windows updates (or if we do, please let me know!). I just wanted to use cheaper international bandwidth for updates, rather than using my more expensive prepaid, non-expiring bandwidth.

Turns out that I only 100Mb of updates to get though, so it wasn't really worthwhile getting a non-prepaid account just for that.

Sorry misunderstood

But

You can use RASPPPOE ( see http://raspppoe.com/index.html )
This program allows you to have different "dial-up accounts" on your desktop.
You can create 2 "dial-up accounts" , each with it's own password and username .
You just select the account you want to use and there you go.
Hope it helps?

Cathryn, maybe just look at setting your router into bridge, thus allowing you to easily change the account you are connecting to, instead of having to log into the router and change the username and password.

Yup, same thing lexor was recommending. Certainly does make it easier to switch accounts, although I'm a bit hesitant since it does make you a bit more vulnerable. Worth doing if I'm going to be switching accounts a lot, though (or if I find I do want split local and international via routesentry, of course).

If your router supports it you can keep the router set to your primary account (thus enjoying the added protection the NAT firewall provides) while logging on from your computer via pppoe as required.

I have a question regarding this. I have a netgear DG834 router it has an option where I can enable PPPoE relay on it, I have my telkom ISP details setup on the router itself but with the PPPoE relay I can also connect to another account from my pc. My question is how do I manage which connection is being used for what, is it possible to control it?

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question.
