Unfortunately my work keeps me away from Cape Town for most of the year but while I am there I rely on information via e-mails etc. I have tried dialup as a cheap method but still have to pay whilst I am away and it sucks whilst Im there! Need a pay as you go broadband that I can access either via my 3G mobile or wifi. Any ideas?

Well it depends where you stay. Some hotels and guest houses now host wireless routers so if you have wireless you just log into the network and up you go.

Part time options

DataPro has a dialup solution called Mahala which allows for no subscription but the calls are premium rated...

iBurst freeflow where you buy a modem (R1800 or R2200 for USB or desktop modem respectively) and get connected for R99 once off. There is no subscription but if you go over the 10MB per month limit, you pay R0.95 per MB thereafter.

MTN offers a low cost connectivity option at something like R75 per month but not sure of the details.

Probably the easiest and best is to simply try to get yourself a decent phone with 3G or HSDPA capabilities. Buy an ad-hoc data bundle from MTN/Vodacom when you need it (or simply pay the R2 per MB that they charge if you don't have a bundle) and get connected that way. Works like a charm for me with my HTC handset if I am out of coverage for iBurst and unable to access my ADSL account.

Obviously there are many internet cafes and coffee shops that offer cheap or even free internet (visit www.skyrove.com for some areas that offer internet - not free though).
