best program to design Advertisements

"(okay, if you really wanted to, you could play it back through vlc etc. but that's not really the point of this thread)." like the idea, it could solve the dual screen problem i am having with power point

if you're having dual screen issues with powerpoint, you need to detect the secondary monitor in the OS before you start powerpoint and then change your slideshow settings to output to the secondary monitor.

"f you want to do it cheap, use video compositing software like windows movie maker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Movie_Maker" - okay cool i am looking into it now! thanks so much

I reckon the best is Apple's Quartz Composer. It's really flexible & powerful, easy to use and looks great. Running off a hackintosh.

Wow... Just wow. I'm glad I haven't been involved in this thread so far. Using Publisher, CorelDRAW and Dreamweaver for video production?

dude, the o.p. doesn't even know what ms publisher is and you expect him to set up a hackintosh...
i love your optimism ;)

he wants to do video for instore displays.
you'll want something that does motion graphics and can render out to some kind of vfw codec no doubt.
use after effects & premiere for pc or motion and final cut if you use mac.
software will set you back R50-20k.
assuming there's no audio...
most of the stuff i've seen in spar runs in a loop off wmp.
they've probably got some kind of wan or vpn set up to do remote admin and content updates.

geez R50-20k is abit much, just buy a macbook or an iMac (even better) for less and use iMovie ($4.99)

ive seen these ads in picknpay and spar, they are not flashy at all, infact they look like power point presentations

I've seen them as well and, with some decent footage, good artwork and a bit of designer know-how, you would be able to pull of a similar (or better) production with Windows Movie Maker or Powerpoint.

@dr.grimm: Like I just mentioned above, you could get away with something like Windows Movie Maker. For just advertising products in a fairly static "video" with a bunch of transitions, moving text and the odd spinning banner, you can just do it with Powerpoint. I've made some very professional-looking looping "videos" with Powerpoint for advertising purposes and, imho, for such a small-scale application it would be ideal. Even making the presentation to be run at 720p, it won't be too resource-hungry either, so a mid-spec PC would run it just fine - another bonus for the client.

I would say a decent Video Editor, is all you really need to make the vids, and then a program to play the videos in a playlist or randomly. (like winamp)
