Brian Hastings on the PS3

Didn't I just go through that?

Hmm, I may have gotten some of the details wrong but the gist of the cassette (may have been 8-track) issue was that the format license holder got everybody on board the format and once it was popular they hiked the license fee's and royalties which ticked everyone off. When Sony tried to license Betamax, the industry smelled a similar rat and backed VHS.

I agree with him on the hard drive issue, if you can put any drive into the PS3. The Xbox 360 drive is extremely expensive and Microsoft's excuse, that 2.5" drives are more expensive, does not justify the premium they are charging. All the companies screw you on the memory cards though.

I hope Microsoft do whatever is necessary to make sure the 360 gets a firm foothold in South Africa, including games being readily available for rent. Solid competition will keep SK in check.

An important factor for me will be region coding of games and movies. If it is there it has to be defeated.

I think the important factor with the Wii will be the games. Although we probably shouldn't underestimate the average person's interest in playing simple games. Some people can play Super Monkey Ball for hours and hours, week after week.

here's a press release for the xbox Elite: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2007/0327-microsoftunveilsxbox360elite.htm

looks like 120G HD for $180 is sort of acceptable...much better than the pricing of those ridiculous 20G versions.

Agreed on all points. That's why I don't want a bundled movie player in my game console. At least 30% of my DVD's are imports, so there's those to worry about let alone new Hi-def movies.

EDIT: As I said, the story was related to me many years ago, so I apologise for the fog of time ;)
