The man at the forefront of Gauteng's fight against crime, and his wife, who heads the Johannesburg City Safety programme, have themselves fallen prey to thugs.
Safety and Security MEC Firoz Cachalia and his wife Nazira were mugged at knifepoint while enjoying an evening stroll in the gardens surrounding Emmarentia Dam.
"The MEC and his wife were accosted by two knife-wielding men on Friday at about 6.45pm. But they were not physically harmed and are both well," said spokesperson Dumisani Ngema, speaking on behalf of Cachalia on Monday.
He said the incident took place "in the same vicinity" as attacks on another two couples, apparently by the same two attackers.
