calc max download speed?

hi guys...

read some where tat in order to calc ur max dl speed u shud divide ur connection by 8. for example a 384 kps connection will giv u a max of 48 kbs download connection. is this true and if so why and how come?!

im interested in taking out a 384 kps adsl package but after reading tat its made me a bit sceptical about it.

any info will be highly appreciated.

the speed you will actually get is more like 1/10th the speed of the line (+-38in your case) , although theoretically it should be 1/8th.

It's a matter of units - IIRC there are 8 bits in a byte so a 384 kilobits per second (kbps) connection will yield 48 kilobytes per second (KB/s). There is also a bit or two in terms of overheads so it actually ends up, as HaNsA says being closer to 1/10th.

Yeah, because of the overhead, you will only get about 38 - 40kb/s max.

yup atm overhead.. tho i've downloaded things at up to 44kB/s Telkom use to give an extra 128kbps extra buffer so your line would sync higher and then soft limit to your proper speed ordered but it was buggy and at times line was up to 80kbps faster hehe its gone now for the low end package/384k not sure about other packaged speeds. It use to make 192k very bearable

My 384 line gives me a constant max download speed of 39.6kb/s I never go above or below it.
