Capped again... sad, very sad.

Well the bad news has come again, but much earlier than I expected.
What really hurts is that I believe that I have not abused the ADSL service.
I play online games, surf the web and download emails. Sure I download the odd program here and there, but they are pretty small and I can honestly say that I have kept application downloads for the month to less than 150MB.
Now I can't even open my favourite international websites at 9am on a Saturday morning...[V]
Well Telkom, if you are reading this, the time is coming where I will be shoving this restricted "broadband" product up your asses![xx(]

I have an admission to make.

I phoned MWeb yesterday and upgraded to ADSl 6 gigs.
Im sorry, but I had to do it. My wife is browsing overseas sites for information that is work related. So I had to do it. Either that or get into trouble. [:D] Im sure you understand.
It goes against everything I have stated before. That I wouldnt pay for more service etc.
But crikey moses, its a lot of money. R539.00 for the month. And that excludes Rental etc. I will downgrade again at a later stage. but for the moment I had to do it. Also perhaps as the rumour goes, we might get a 10 gig limit soon. But Im not holding my breath.

Well we live in hope in SA. What other option is their.

onionpeel, I know the feeling mate, I will be capped in no more than 2 days time. Sucks big time.
 
Err, that rumour did not sound positive to me.

From what I understood the 10Gb cap means 3Gb international and then after that your local gets capped at 10Gb?

Ja well no fine - I've been capped since the 10th, and have to rely on my dial-up to get some international access. I did enquire about purchasing additional capacity, but balked at the necessity for having to go through Telkom's procedure for registering a new account - why the devil must I fill in another application form and wait for credit approval, etc., as an existing customer?

When I asked the PFY, the response was 'our system can't do it any other way'! Says a lot about their application development, in my opinion - it should be a simple enough matter to include a flagged facility for additional transaction computation on existing accounts, as necessary. The tragedy is that should the 10Gb facility prove to be true, their application system limitations will probably still hold true...
 
It is never, in my opinion, a good idea to upgrade to a 6 or 9Gig a month package.

A better solution in my opinion would be to rather get a 2nd account - some isp's offer aan adsl account for as "little" as R235pm (access only - no email). that is all you need. Once the 1st account is capped, simply use that one for all your local traffic and the 2nd one for international traffic only. This way you could go further with your international bandwidth.

If it suits your needs, better option may even be to share a 2nd account with a friend, and after capping this 1/3rd into the month only use for local traffic. Your own account is then used for international for the rest of the month.

I know that switching between accounts is a pain at times (sometimes one has to reboot) but this works quite effectively - been sharing a 2nd account for a few months now and it works well.
 
The point is that it should not be necessary to have to flit between different facilities or accounts to obtain the service required. Even with the current constraints, the facility should exist to enable hassle-free usage, and your provider should have available both systems management, technological capability and administrative support facilities that promote this objective. Instead, we have the situation where the customer must find ways and means to achieve the desired level of service - an absolute tragedy, given the known technical capabilities of the ADSL service.

As a consumer-oriented product, it would be appropriate for Telkom to adopt a consumer-marketing and service approach - I am reminded of the lengths that certain retailers will go to, to obtain the exact product you're after, even if it means buying it in from a competitor. But then again, this is Telkom we're talking about *sigh*...

I agree with you. However at this stage Im not too concerned about downloading too much. Im more concerned about being able to actually view a webpage I click on. And then printing or saving pictures for work.
This scenario of mass downloading also only holds true if you download from local servers etc. If telkom decides to limit you to 10 gigs in total, I reckon their would be even more guys posting their gripes on MyADSL as they would be closing up that hole. I reckon then Telkom would have really overstepped the mark. They would be opening themselves up to a legal suite, I doubt they could win. But with telkom anything is possible. They did it already by enforcing the 3 gigs to total usage last year.
Telkom amazes me. They sure know how to alienate their customers.

I agree - it should not be necessary to revert to such measures to get a "reasonable" service - however - in this situation one has to make a plan.

I download a lot from local servers so this option suits me fine.

However, should Telkom implement the 10Gig cap, that will also be the end of adsl for me. My current setup to a large extent serves my needs and the speeds are fair - but if 10Gig cap comes in I WILL give up my adsl and go over to Sentech - there is no doubt in my mind.

I also believe many others will follow the route to Sentech if that happens. Telkom should be very aware of the possible impact of such a cap.
 
Well you folk are forgetting about one thing...
Although a new flavour of the ADSL product (as mentioned on this forum) will be a welcome relief to the exisiting limitations of their current design, we still have no idea how much it is going to cost!

Good Point.

They probably want to increase prices. So they pretend to launch "new" products. But when you analyse them, its the same thing but for more money. Here and their a small change.

Whats wrong with these people. Dont they listen to what their customers needs are? Touch Tomorrow, my foet. Its more like, why worry, tomorrows another day.

For ONIONPEEL - true, cost is a very relevant consideration, but I believe the deliberate crippling of the technology for supposedly equable bandwidth distribution, is a greater sin. As is their inefficiency as a public service provider, consumer marketing organisation and downright unethical business practices manifest in their legal challenges to protect their monopolistic condition, despite their solus standing having expired a while ago. It would be par for the course were Telkom to offer an increased volume facility at a vastly increased cost - if I remember correctly, I think RPM's submission to ICASA included comparative pricings for similar services in other countries, highlighting the fact that Telkom's is way above the norm...

Just that the Telkom guys apparently had a meeting with regards to ADSL and the progress of Sentech MyWireless. (Seems competition is finally going to pay off) There are apparently talks of a wider choice of ADSL products. Different Caps and different speeds[?]
Apparently this was / is being looked at. Only time will tell how true this is.

We can only hope hey [:)]

Just a pity it takes something like Sentech to get Telkom to get off their butts. When will they start listening and hearing what their customers want. Oh, but tomorrows another day, so why touch or do anything today. Are you sure Telkom isnt run by Cape Townians. No offence to any Capies here, as Im one 2.
Anyone having dealings with business people in Cape Town will always understand why its called the Mother City. Because it takes 9 months to do anything.[:D]

For 539 a month, I would Seriously consider getting MyWireless 128K as an addition. I did exactly this, and kept my ADSL.

After a lot of fiddling and configuring with my Linux machine, I can surf local sites via ADSL, and international stuff via MyWireless seamlessly.

Now, when I get capped, I don't even realize it.
