Cell C has gone HSDPA! Here's the proof!

so few people actually read this topic..


I think they might have hdspa at cellc's office. Perhaps that is why you saw such high speeds. Don't think any office could work with only edge speeds.

Meanwhile, Hedberg has confirmed that Cell C will build a broadband wireless network using 3G HSDPA technology. The network will serve consumers in SA’s urban centres. Cell C has been criticised for only offering slower GPRS and Edge services.

It is testing a 3G network but Hedberg says it will not launch 3G services until he is sure that the “economics are right”.

“Ultimately we will have some level of broadband data capability with 3G HSDPA,” he says. “It will be a requirement to retain customers, largely from a perception perspective.”

He says the cost of rolling out a 3G network has fallen significantly in recent years, making it a more viable proposition financially. 3G handsets prices remain high, though, he says, and this is a challenge.

He adds that data prices remain high and that Cell C will soon review how much it charges its customers for Internet access.

Cell C considered the option of skipping 3G and instead building a network using 4G technology based on Long-Term Evolution, or LTE. But the company decided against it. “We thought about it but it’s so unproven and it’s not a key focus for us. Our key focus areas continue to be voice, SMS and broadband, in that order.”

Is not a little too late for Cell C to be jumping on the 3G bandwagon?I guess this will only serve them right if their primary aim is to retain customers than gain them.
 
In short: Internet used to be too expensive(Sat-3/Safe) to make profit by offering it to consumers(even at 2rand per meg). But now that seacom is arriving soon the more bandwith we will have, so to capitalise we must upgrade our infrastructure and we can get in on the action..

Well if they haven't gone 3G by end of the year when my contrat expires then i'm jumping to another network which can offer me 3G.....
 
I did a Speedtest using CellC to connect.

If it wasn't so slow it would be worth a laugh.

 
Well, at first I thought this was bull$%*t but I'm in Morningside (at the City Lodge) using Cell C HSDPA and it's flying. Definitely NOT the Vodacom network.

Did a UMTS only manual network search on my phone: MTN, Vodacom, 02 (Telkom) AND Cell C.
 
That makes sense, you are very close to their head office. I presume that's the test site/area for their 3G deployment.

Whilst visiting mom-in-law in PE (smallholding, Greenbushes area) I used to pick up 3G speeds.

But I assume it's because CellC shared a tower with MTN/Vodacom, hence the 3G speeds. The cellphone showed a 3G instead of GPRS, and it was NOT GPRS/Edge speeds which I connected at.
