I have searched the web and this forum in detail for an answer to this simple question and I see their is a lot of "oaks" that know what they are talking about.

Is it possible to detect a users cellphone number when he enters a specific area?

The only way I can think of is to use Vodacom's Look4me service. You need the consent of the guy you are trying to track. The service will tell you the radius and the location of the tower that his cellphone is currently (or not so currently) using. It seems that you can set up Look4me to send you periodic e-mails to do this.

From a network point of view yes.

Personal point no.

Hmmm. What a shame. I have identified a serious business oppertunity, if I could detect the cell number. What a shame. Bang goes another idea!

Well...

I have on my Nokia 6680 a program called CellTrack that you can use to keep track of the cellid's of the towers that your phone uses. Unfortunately it's up to you to determine the physical location of the tower. I doubt whether Vodacom has made this information publically available. The other issue is the distance from the tower. Although the program can tell you the signal strength it is not a reliable way to determine the distance from the tower.

It should be possible to write a program along the lines of CellTrack to do what you want to do but the issues I have mentioned will probably make the idea unreliable.

How about using GPS instead? An increasing number of phones have GPS receivers built in.

All I want to do, is send a sms to a person entering a specific area and to be able to do that, I need to know what his cell number is, unless their is another way that I do not know of to send a sms to a user in a specific area.

Whoever figures this riddle out, will become a very rich man.
