After speaking to a Telkom drone in Table View I think I have found the cheapest method of getting ADSL installed from scratch.

Order the lowest closer package and once installed cancell it and upgrade to DSL with self install. This means no installation charge at all. Usually the line is a 300 odd rand install fee.

Oh yes, if you take a Do Broadband package you also get a free wireless modem/switch from Telkom even if you don't take a contract.

Are you sure there's no installation charge on the cheapest Closer package? I'm pretty sure that there is - there's no *activation* fee, but that's different, there's still an installation fee.

I'll double check but that's what I was told.

Called them and installation and activation is free.

Interesting. I just had a line installed on Closer 2, so I'll have to wait and see if they charge me the installation fee - maybe I'll get lucky :D

Of course, if Telkom had realtime online billing like the mobile operators have, I wouldn't have to wait a month to find out, but that's another thread altogether.
