Afternoon folks,

APOLOGIES IF THIS IS THE WRONG GROUP.

I purchased a prepaid meter token for R8500 - but it is for the wrong meter number.... I cannot find out who does own that meter.
I have been told that it is impossible for the meter number that the token is associated cannot be transferred to my meter number?

Can anyone please advise me on this....

Even if you do find the owner of the meter number, how are you going to convince them to pay you R 8 500 to get the token you bought..?

Your best bet is finding the right people at CoJ to talk to, to see if the token can be invalidated and they can refund you.. I was in a similar situation and this is something that CoCT can do, but there is a cost associated with it, so I would not expect to get a full refund if CoJ can do this..

I have already paid a consultant R2500 to do this... but they say they need to first gain access to the meter that was used & that CoJ have been there twice, but it is in a complex & until they can verify that it has not been used, they cannot do anything -
They also said it is policy NOT to refund as a token is considered used as soon as it is issued
I know I will lose money - entirely my own fault - I just cannot get them to do anything
This has been going on since 3 July & now today they said the token is about to expire & then it is null & void.

Sounds like you are stuck waiting on access to the other meter to be successful for anything else to happen..

Best you keep following up with them so they stay on top of it.. Probably the only thing you can do at this point..

What if the meter belongs to someone overseas - or a AirBnB or anything that stops them getting access... It makes no sense why they need physical access toa meter? Surely this is all saved digitally.
If they change the token numer to my meter then even if it has been used it will not activate on my meter?

I am super confused. Are you able to privately share who assisted you?

The token is calculated using details specific to the meter it was purchased for.. This is why you can't just use the token on any meter..

CoCT told me the same thing, they need physical access to the meter the token was purchased for.. This is required to confirm that the token was never used and to invalidate it..

I worked directly with the CoCT, so I have no one you can contact.. Not that it matters though, until physical access to the meter has been possible, nothing else is going to happen..

Slightly off topic, I saw Blu Label is working on a universal token system. Whether it's going to be a good thing is anybody's guess.

Essentially you'd be able to buy a token and use it for anything that accepts Blu tokens and it's not hard linked to any one platform (mobile network, electricity, Blu voucher) and you will even be able to split the token amount accross platforms.

Don't know how far from implementation that initiative is yet, but it would have been useful in OP's case (load it as an R8. 5k Blu voucher on Betway, and immediately cash it out into your bank account).

How would that ensure that the token is invalidated for the prepaid meter..?

I don't think your approach is one the Blu Label would allow for electricity purchases, because as far as the meter is concerned, that token is still going to be valid, so this would open up the potential for fraud..

Unfortunately, you're questioning the messenger here.

I was simply drawing attention to what I read being launched. OP has nothing to lose by simply checking if the system is already in place and if in the affirmative, whether the voucher he has was issued by Blu and then moving from there.

Edit: DIY testing that token number by using his mobile network's USSD shortcode to recharge is probably not the best idea! Que next thread: "I have R8 500 worth of airtime that I don't know what to use for!"

What consultant, someone from COJ?
And why a R2500 fee, especially considering they can't even help you?!

All very good questions.... I have been to Midrand, Randburg & Booysens & get different answers from everyone. The consultant apparently "works for CoJ" was sent to he by my estate agent. I cannot be the first person to ever make a mistake when entering a meter number? The consultant says that there is a note on my account saying that the money was paid incorrectly to another number & that there is a transfer in progress... but no-one else can find the reference number she gave me & apparently the token expires after 3 months & the money is then lost - hence I turned here for advice as we are now 2 months in....

Interesting post situation to read, as this can happen easily.

Only question though, why such a big amount for an once off electricity purchase, that your usual consumption +-?

I have a question about this that worries me:
I assume the OP bought the token, and the token was sent to him, for the incorrect meter.
How is the other meter owner going to know there's a token generated for his meter?

The tokens are specific to a meter, and encrypted.

On BLU's system it was definitely possible to revoke a token, as long as it wasn't used. The OP no doubt tried to enter the token and the meter told him NOPE.

That 3 month expiry is nonsense.

The legal requirement is 2 years as I recall.
