Greetings all,
Several people have asked how to configure the ADSL Pots as a Router, so I will give it a go. (I am no Router expert, but this works for me) [
]
Connect the Router directly to your PC via a xover cable (as supplied by telkom). Unplug any other network cables and diasable any WiFi cards. (we want to make this as simple as possible)
In Win2000/xp open command and run "ipconfig /renew" to get an IP address from the router. in win98 run "winipcfg" and press the renew button.
run "ping 192.168.10.200" to confirm that you can see the router.
In explorer connections make sure that nothing is set (i.e. no proxy etc)
enter http://192.168.10.200 into explorer
enter the password "root" if you have not changed it, and you should see the "Quick Setup - Protocol" page display.
select - PPP over Ethernet ( RFC 2516 )
press NEXT
press NEXT again
enter your ISP Provided USERNAME and PASSWORD
press NEXT
press FINISH
press SAVE
press RESTART
wait till the web page displays "System Ready"
That is it, you now have a router that can auto logon, but whilst we are in there it is a good idea to set up some basic security.
on the left click "Basic Config " and then "System"
under "System Parameters:"
enter a username and password to replace the default of "root and root". write it down and stick it to the router so that you can get back in again if you forget it. This will prevent people on the internet from playing with your router settings. (you can also change the "Router IP: " but rather I'd leave that to the experts)
press FINISH

Comment from EFL - The other essential changes are the default passwords on the telnet settings. This is as much of a danger from hackers as the HTTP settings. In fact a malicious person could telnet into your router easily and scramble it with ease if it is left on the default settings.
on the left click "Telnet / Console"
Select a user profile and enter a username and password
repeat for the other two or select and delete them (Your choice)
on the left press "Save & Restart"
press SAVE
press RESTART
Whilst the router is restarting you can uninstall the telcom supplied PPPoE client from all your PC's as it is no longer needed.
connect your pc and router back onto the hub and re-enable any wifi etc.
run "ipconfig /renew" just in case you have other dhcp servers, and away you go. All PC's on the LAN should now be able to see the Internet (if any of them can't then clear the explorer settings as above and renew the IP on that PC).
If you make a mistake or forget the password etc. don't panic.
Turn off the Router, press and hold the reset button (next to the powere switch) turn on the router (Whilst holding the reset) and wait 40 seconds. release the reset and your router is back to the factory default settings.
That it for now.
