Connecting two laptops via LAN

Despite what everybody says, using a crossover cable just makes things a lot easier.
Or a hub/router if you have one.

Once you get the networking part right another easy way to access the file from the old PC is to click Start > Run and type \\oldcomputername\c$ or \\x.x.x.x\c$ (where x.x.x.x is the Ip address) to access the default share on the old PC which will then allow you to navigate through all the files on old pc without necessarily manually sharing them. By default you will need an admin account with a password on the old PC to access it's shares

It's 2014.

You haven't needed them for about 5 years now.

There's nothing easier or different about it. Specially going to buy one actually makes it harder.

If they are connected to the Router it's much simpler as they'll each have an IP address.

So on the laptop you want to connect TO go Start > Run (or Windows Key + R) and type "cmd".

Then type "ipconfig" and press enter.

You'll see an IP address listed that should be something like 192.168.0.* or 192.168.1.* or maybe 10.0.0.* even.

Take that address and go to the other laptop and do Start > Run again and simply type "\\IPADDRESS" and you should be golden.

Of course a USB flash drive or external drive will make your life infinitely easier.

Sorted in no time. Thank you all! :D
