Hey there guys.

I finally got ADSL installed at my home in Midrand.
I was using a D-Link 504G router back in Alberton which worked peaches on 512k.

Apparently the "Conformancy test" here in Midrand failed on 512 and 384, But works on 192 (Im still getting about 34k/sec on this thing).

My problem is im on a loan Telkom router which keeps the connection but my D-Link modem keeps it for about 5 seconds before dropping it again. The Telkom technician said my D-Link might be "Too sensitive". Is there anything I could do in the router setup to change this ? I dont wanna fork out for an old krappy Telkom router when I have a good one right here.

Ontop of the fact I can't find the router in my browser , i've tried the common IP numbers (192.168.1.200/192.168.10.200). Is there any way to search for it ? And what is the standard user/pass again ?

Thanks for any info guys
:)

Try updating the firmware to this version. Apparently it solves some SA specific connection issues.

Default IP for D-Link is 192.168.1.1, admin/admin

go to network connections.
then click on the routers name
click on support and its ip adress is given.
Logon and fill in the password dabean gave above:)
Change the firmware and restart factory settings
its should work:D

Thanks for the info guys !

I downloaded the firmware update and after unzipping it it leaves me with a .bin file.
I've tried to put this into Alcohol and do all sorts of chit to it but I cant seem to figure out what to do with it ?

lilgindauk - I look in my network connections and cant find the router ? I did change the IP address on it awhile ago but for the life of me I cant remember it or access it. I dont have a USB router, its ethernet.

Thanks

Well you need to upload it to the router.

In the webadmin interface of the route there should be an option called firmware upgrade ... just point it to the .bin file on your PC and it will take care of the rest.

To find the IP of your router run ipconfig, it will be the default gateway.

Edit: btw, the option is called 'Update Gateway' under Tools in the interface.

Thanks again guys but I still cannot find my router.

I think ive tried everything.
I've tried to hit 192.168.0.1/10/100/200 , 192.168.1, 192.168.10.

Nothing hits my Dlinks setup screen.
Is there any way to find this out ? dabean - I ran ipconfig and and looked at default gateway, but it doesnt list anything !

This router isnt configured with the user/pass or anything, its just a ethernet hub/adsl router.

Arent there any apps to find a gawdamn router on your network ? :P

Try 'ipconfig /all' then, it has to be your gateway if it's in router mode and not bridge mode.

Worst case scenario - do a factory reset. Theres a small button on the back of the unit, just above the power: use a ballpoint pen to press it in for about five seconds while the unit is on. You should see the lights start flashing when it reboots.

It will be back to factory settings then, 192.168.1.1 and admin/admin. Just set up a new PPPoE connection using your adsl username/password (VPI:8, VCI:35).

Just reset the friggn router! press and hold the reset switch for 20secs keep holding, remove the power, insert power, hold 20sec and release reste switch....

Okay , FINALLY managed to find the IP Addy.
Must have been an old firmware I had.

It was 10.1.1.1 at a subnet of 255.0.0.0

Ran the firmware upgrade , pointed it to that file that was linked and now the modem's lights are all on and nothing works, not even the hub facility. I didnt interupt the upload phase or do anything weird, the modem has just been rendered usless.

Who do I phone ? :P

Congrats ... you have managed to brick your first modem :(.

Wrong firmware perhaps ???.

Yup, lovely experience :P

It was the firmware recommended by one of the guys above. Seems to be the correct Model number etc. But thats not what my modem thinks :P

Perhaps Dlink S.A can bring it back to life but I rather doubt it.
Warranty ???.

yeah they not too far from me. I'll hopefully swing past there.

Warranty must be dead by now.
If I had to get a new router what u guys recommend ?
