Debates - Potential Faulty Science

Problem with the Shell Model for Nuclei:

The p-orbitals must be spherically symmetricly placed, so they must be located on the x, y and z axis in which case only 4 of them can orbit. So how is p_1/2 orbitals to display spin-orbit coupling? Only 4 of them can orbit because if the z axis also orbits (a twofold rotation) then L would not be z-directed aligned or anti-aligned to spin direction in the laboratory frame of reference.

The response that the orbital angular momentum is not literally suggesting the nucleons actually orbit is unphysical.

Also the Shell Model predicts J=5/2 for the F-19 nucleus. then it must postulate the following orbital angular momentum coupling:

[(5/2\tensorproduct5/2)_{J_nn = 2}\tensorproduct5/2]_{J = 1/2},

in order to explain its J=1/2 actual value. The operation must make a choice over several values of J and no physical reason is given why J is chosen as 1/2. The value appears in the subscript of the formula!

My way is the following configuration for F-19: protons: 1s1, 2p6, 1d2, nuetrons: 1s2, 2p6, 1d2. This gives J=1/2 since the proton in the 1s-orbital is unpaired in spin and has L=0.
