Does fibre work during load shedding?

Hi thedevv

As everyone stated depends.
I got TTConnect with Afrihost about 2 months ago. Initially it was ok, but as we moved up in stages, as of a week ago, it lasts 1 and half hours when the power goes out and comes back about 5 minutes after the power returns.

Loadshedding here is 2 and half to 4 and half hours depending on schedule. Rynfield, Benoni.

I have to use Vodacom prepaid LTE running at 1.5Mbps for when the fibre is down. Not great for working from home! I'm awaiting feedback from Afrihost regarding the issue.

Not sure what I will do if they can't get it sorted.

@Slamz
Same here, not a single official report when this happens. I started logging faults every time it happens, but they stopped responding to me.
I am in Farrarmere and have the choice between TTConnect and Openserve. You might have more than just TTConnect as an option?

this is not true, we on Vuma and everytime theres LS, after bout 30 mins our line is down, and this is every single time. So it may greatly depend on your suburb and if Vuma has sufficient backup power... and btw, not a single time have i seen a network incident logged for my area when they are down due to LS, only for adhoc incidents

I'd think the rep on these forums knows a tad bit more than you do, when it comes to these things. So saying it's not true, is kinda silly, when it clearly is. In the 2 years I have had solar, and the many power outages + LS in the area, my Vuma line has not died. Not even once.

So, they definitely have backups in place.

My vumatel very rarely goes down with LS - only really prolonged (20+hours) area outages seem to affect it

Seems to depend on where you are.
Had a 5 day power failure and vuma was working the entire time.

Yep, that’s why a say it’s a whole lot of hogwash that they have backup everywhere… our experience says differently and our entire complex WhatsApp group can confirm it

So you saying that the reps know that my line is up in my home even though it’s clearly down during loadshedding? And I even have comms from my entire complex complaining about it.

Did you even think before you responded otherwise that would just be silly

Also in Farrarmere, I was very thankful for TT Connect because they were first FNO available for me and I was probably one of the 1st clients to sign up here (because my DSL barely got 2Mbps). For 3 years I was happy, but then their reliability went pear-shaped. I could not afford to work like that anymore and switched to Openserve about 20 months ago. So far happy.
Also never noticed any issue during load shedding with Openserve.

How an ISP can think that their service going down during loadshedding is acceptable is beyond me.

Can't comment about Vumatel, but I'm with Openserve and their (Telkom's) exchanges are rock-solid during loadshedding. In the 2 years I've had fibre it's never gone down during loadshedding once.
