Domain Registrar recommendations...

I'm looking for options on Domain Registrations bcos I have a new domain I need to get going.

A main critera is complete DNS control, and preferably support for adding text entries to implement SPF (http://spf.pobox.com/). Integrated DynDNS like ZoneEdit would also be nice.

I've mostly registered domains thru Network Solutions, but they are a tad pricy.

At the moment I'm quite keen on going with DynDNS.org.

I've also investigated Mad Dog Domains & Cattle CO, they are a lot cheaper for just registering.

Depends what platform you want to host on: .asp, .php, .NET etc?

I am using HasWEB as my hosting solution and I'm quite happy with them. But they only support .php. You get a MySQL database, a cpanel control interface, 75Gigs of traffic, mailboxes and a whole bunch of other goodies.

Check out their site at www.hasweb.com - they're cheap and VERY efficient.

Ok, thanks, but what about registrations?

There is one downside to DynDNS.org, they don't do private registrations, so my name, address etc will end up in WhoIs, which has in the past been a problem, if I decide to go with them I will use 'special' email addresses.

Both Network Solutions and the cattle prod company do private registrations.

Basically what I'm looking for is a domain registrar that is a sort of hybrid between say DynDNS, ZoneEdit, Network Solutions, but with a reasonable price tag.

The ability to manage unrelated domains under separate accounts with a single login/username, like Network Solutions Account Manager would also be beneficial.

I need to get this domain registration sorted on/before Sunday, so keep those suggestions flowing <i>please</i>.

PS: Google was being pedantic again, and is everytime I try search for a better registrar, and a better hosting company. So word of mouth seems to be the better option for me.

Hi ic.

I use http://Mydomain.com It may not have all the features that you are looking for but the price is good and I manage several subdomains and about 30 odd email aliases through them plus url forwarding. My first two years were hassle free, and reliable, so I signed up for another 5 years in advance.

You know what, folks - you should all check local facilities first, before using services located elsewhere. Besides issues of cost, I believe all other considerations MUST be over-ridden by the decision to go local - after all, this serves to grow the local service sector, which is what we need. And if you're a commercial endeavour generating margins, you should even sacrifice a portion of that for the sake of boosting the local scene. Of course, self-funded and completely open forums like MyADSL fall into a different category, and are justifiably hosted elsewhere due to the inhibiting actions of Telkrap. Something to think about, not so?

I agree it is best to weigh up all your options (reason for this post), however small businesses don't necessarily have the capital to subsidise telscum (spits - phuggg! phuggg!), which I have to say is what happens when you go local - telscum (phuggg! phuggg!) ends up grabbing way more than it should be allowed to do a runner with.

Having said all that I still haven't made up my mind - registrar sort of, but not really on the hosting side.

Hi Antowan,

I am in the process of trying to get one of my domains transferred over to NO-IP.com from UK2.NET (biggest crooks on the planet) since my hosting there expires shortly.

I decided on NO-IP.com as I'm already using their DUC s/w, but more due to their support for SPF, and that's what I want to know, have you got any SPF records setup with NO-IP.com on the Plus package, if so what should I know?

Hi!

Nope, I run no mail services through no-ip.com and thus I would not be able to answer your question. Would the PLUS package give you access to that though? You might have to buy a mail service package as well.
