Hi all
Every now and again, (like last night) all of a sudden my adsl gets all messed up.
I'm using the mega100 router.
If I log into my router's settings, I can see that the Dsl is up, that the upstream is 384 kb/sec, and the downstream 4096.
However, the internet isn't connected, and if I press the "Connect" button, the page refreshes, after which I'm still having the same problem.
I've tried resetting my router manually, I've even shut down my pc and router for a couple of hours, no success.
The strange thing is that, after you phoned the dsl support line and have waited for an average of 20 minutes, the guy at the help desk says that he can clearly see the line is working propperly and that they cannot determine the problem.
Then, after about 8 hours or so, if you try to access the Internet again, all is working 100%, as if there never was a problem.

According to my ISP (Isat), there doesn't seem to be a problem on their side.
Any ideas?
This is really getting at me now, for every month I pay a hell of a lot of money to Telkom, and the service I get is less than reliable, to say the least.

Thanks for your time.

From the sounds of things, your ADSL line is syncing.

I have a 5102G router, I hope there are similaritites !

This router has an "Interface Setup" tab in the router web-interface. Then "Internet" just underneath it. Now check the following are correct:
VPI: 8
VCI: 35
ATM QoS: UBR
<all QoS subsections set to 0>
Encapsulation ISP: PPPoA/PPPoE (See Note *)
Username: <username>
Password: <password>
Encapsulation: PPPoE LLC

* NOTE: This is the default setting. If your router is in bridge mode, IE using PPPoE protocol to establish the connection as opposed to using the router's web-interface, then Encapsulation ISP will be : Bridge Mode and the text box below it must be the one that contains "LLC" somewhere in it, NOT "VC-Mux".

The thing about all that I have just said is that it should come standard on the router from Telkom, which leads me to believe that perhaps the problem is one of the following:
1. Line attenuation/SNR problems
2. Your username/password may be incorrectly stored by your router, or could be case-sensitive or something like that.

For interest's sake, here is my line attenuation and SNR results:

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin : 42.5 26.0 db
Line Attenuation: 26.5 15.5 db

I'm on a 384 kbps line (down) 128 kbps (up).

Hope that this helps, or at least leads to a further comment that will :)

Hey im still new to this but i had similar problem in the past and when i phoned in to telkom the guy said he is gonna change my port to see if my connection will work again.Once the port was changed my connection worked ten min later...

Possible port error

Hi Quenten

From your description it sounds like you are experiencing what is known as a port error. Next time this happens, check on the front panel of your router if the PPP led is on. If not put your router in bridge mode, create a dial-up connection in your Network places and try to connect to the Internet, I am sure your will get an Error 678 - Remote host not responding. After that call Tel$%&* and tell them you get an Error 678. They will ask you to reset your router, unplug the cable and all sorts of senseless things, just tell them you have done all of the above, and they will give you a reference number. As a point of interest my connection logs shows I had a port error from 8:30 on the 9/5/ until 00:03 on the 11/5 and I am just as fed with this as you are. Hope this helps

Thanks for all the tips.
This may seem like a stupid question, but can someone just tell me how to change the router to bridge connection?
Also, I have had more reference numbers from the Telcompany than I can remember.
I just can't understand why everything (according to my dsl settings), show that there is a connection, but for the life of me I can't connect, and then, boom, 8 hours or so later, there all is working again.
This is less than desirable, to put it mildly.
I would hope for the more than R600 I have to pay each month, I would at least get a decent, and above all, reliable service here.
Or is this wishful thinking?

Bridged mode

Quinten

Check your modems web interface or whatever interface you use to manage your router, you should find the place where you can change between PPPoE or Bridged mode - on my Billion router it is on the same page in the web interface, unfortunately I am not familiar with your specific router. I hope this helps.
