Good day Forum mates,
It's good to see that there are a lot of interests with regarsd to the CellC Edge. What i can tell you to answer to some of the questions out there is that i know for sure that Cell C does not have Edge coverage in the Krugersdorp area yet. It is meant to be implemented sometimes in mid Jan 2006.

Tried in Krugersdorp:
EDGE is there for sure but when i do the Telkom test it times out after a while....however the speeds i seen on DU meter whilst doing the test before it times out and stops downloading where between 20kbps and 200 kbps...seems the speed is there but heavy latency when browsing and then it stops downloading ( times out ) every few minutes

Some tests in Stellenbosch

Using my 6680 connected via Bluetooth and monitoring the connection with netmonitor and a stopwatch:
Channel E5, signal -70 dBm, netmonitor indicates it is an EDGE tower
3 file downloads simultaneously, 8 threads in total with Freedownload manager and Firefox: 500 kByte in 88 seconds = 45 kbps
Download stops every now and then for about a second or two and gets going again. Speed varies between 0 and 20 kByte/sec

Downloading only one of the ads on Cell C's website and nothing else:
52 seconds for 100 kByte = wayy too slow

Channel 718, signal -85 dBm, again an EDGE tower
3 file downloads simultaneously, 12 threads in total:
500 kByte in 75 seconds = 53 kbps
Again download stops and starts, speeds vary between 0 and 20 kByte/sec

2 of the 3 above files were from Tucows/SAIX/MWEB servers locally and one international.
Unless there is something wrong with my setup, it would seem that Cell C has the capability of EDGE speeds (i.e. 20 kB or 160
kbits/sec) but somewhere something is going wrong as the average is way below that.

Speed test

There are currently a few problems with EDGE on some base stations not all. The telkom lines running to there base stations are ok but the exchange ain't that great (What can you expect from telkom). every base station that Cell C owns will be upgraded. And also remember that Nokia's are not the fastest when it comes to internet connections, Motorola then Samsung then Nokia. As I have all three handsets all with EDGE and new. I just did a simple download speed test with all three:

Motorola Pebl U6: 28 kByte/sec
Samsung E340E: 24 kByte/sec
Nokia 6680: 21 kByte/sec

I was on the same base station
Downloading the same file (locally)
And using the same program "Free Download Manager"

Cell C 3G, are you saying you are in Stellenbosch and you downloaded from the SAME towers as me?

Why is the Nokia 6680 slower?
It is a Class 10 EDGE device. I find this quite strange. I recently tested a number of towers from VC in Stellenbosch and got a very consistent 210 kbits/sec (26 kByte/sec) from all of them (except 1 maybe).

Thanks for replying, hope you got some sleep ;)

The reason

No i am in Durban,

Well Cell C's 2G base stations are made by Siemens. and Samsung & Motorola Started sharing technology at the end of last year soon there phones will be using the same software. So Moto's & Samsungs work the best on Cell C's Network. Unlike Vodacom who use Alcatel, Motorola, That is why Vodacom can't do the EDGE software upgrade in KZN & Gauteng Because there is no upgrade Avaliable from Motorola. There 3G network they only used Siemens.
MTN only uses Ericsson for 2G & 3G. Just like Cell C only uses Siemens.

Then we get hellkom in the middle who messes everything up for the 3 networks because Hellkoms technology is older then they are!

I always thought Cell C uses Siemens.....

Edge isn't that like pre ADSL dialup are faster
I fought this is a broadband forum but then again mywireless isnt broadband either

Well.. If you want I could give you the phone number of the financial director of siemens... You could ask him if they have any upgrades planned for our telecommunications network?

Cell-C's network consist of Siemens equipment and NOT Motorola....

Vodacom's uses Alcatel and Motorola and MTN's uses Ericsson.....

Confirmed this with mates I know in all 3 networks...

so where did CELLC3g get the info from that its motorola? CELLc3G please comment..

Looking better now.
14 threads total on 4 different file downloads simultaneously, 3 local and 1 international, getting 153 kbps (on channel E5, EDGE tower)

I would still like to see 236 kbps though.

EDIT: Repeated test at 21h31. Got 226 kbps :)
