For this announcement, I need some dramatic music *cues the dramatic music*. I also need some lights, a smoke machine, and maybe a laser or two....

THE LONG AWAITED ETHERNET CABLES HAVE FINALLY ARRIVED

Yay!!! Who wants one? (REMOVED). I can now FINALLY actually USE my smoothwall!

EDIT: They are R 250, same price as the shops. I guess I should have mentioned that...

Same price as they are in the shops.. R 250.

I wish I could offer them cheaper than that, I feel that R 250 is such a ripoff for a piece of cable (CAT5 is like R 3/meter)... but I guess we're stuck with these prices for now.

I'm not defending the price... just correcting the comment made by Donovan.

It's not RJ45 + 3m cat5 cable.

There's the little protocol converter box - if that is what it does ... maybe it needs opening ;-)

My understanding is that whatever is in the box inline to the wire handled the conversion of the modem's proprietary protocol to PPPoE.

Sad thing is that the PPPoE they use has had some extensions added that are not officially supported by the RFC.

I'm located in Roodepoort (West Rand, JHB). BUT, I will be going to Pretoria later and fetching the cables, and I am trying to get an idea of how many I am going to need. If you're not too far from any of the offramps on the N1 anywhere between the 14th avenue offramp, and the Atterbury Offramp, then let me know and I'll drop one off with you at no additional fee. After that, I'll be quite happy to make an arrangement or have people collect at my place.

PLEASE email me if you want one by 15:00 this afternoon. [email protected].

My apologies for the mistake regarding the cable.. I thought it was CAT5. Oops ;)

I paid R250 for mine, standard price it seems.

Cable is the same length as the USB, but with an RJ45 expansion connector (not sure what they are called :) ), you can obviously hook up a longer cable - altho it obviously has to be wired the same as the 'mywireless' ethernet cable :) - maybe you can add that to your services Donavan - offer ethernet extension cables ?

Ok, seems I caused some confusion.

Yes, the cable type is CAT5.
Yes, there is an RJ45 connector on one end
Yes, there is a custom modem connector on the other end

The cable is NON-STANDARD as it has a protocol conversion box about 30cm from the modem connector side. This converts the modem protocol into the ethernet protocol (as I understand it)

The cable is configured as a cross-over cable. In other words it must plug directly into a network card, a uplink port on a hub or if plugged into any other device the device must be set to "cross-over".

As to extending it... you could buy RJ45 Female-Female boxes and run a standard CAT5 straight cable.

Hope this helps

I got the ethernet cable + female/female box and a 20m extension, works well [:D]

I'd like to take a multimeter and look at the ethernet cable to determine if that box does actually do anything except having a LED to show link status, since the modem does not have a link LED, but I hate disconnecting my box from the Net [:)]

It seems many people are making this mistake...

The helephony suppot at Sentech don't know squat either...

I asked them why a normal ethernet CAT-5 cable was so expensive, then they replied:

<insert boorish accent> Uh, I don't know. </insert>

PS: the cable is well worth it and relatively inexpensive at R250 IMHO.

Is the ethernet cable specific to mywireless??
Is it simply a usb to ethernet converter, I found this at place in linbro park
USB TO ETHERNET 10/100MHZ 53 R 225.00
Actually, whatever way you look at it, mywireless ethernet cable seems to be a decent price.
But for curiositys sake, does anyone think there would be a difference in the 2's ability??

USB to Ethernet convertor is actually a USB Network card, it's so you can plug into a network with your USB port.

There's a BIG difference between the two.

The ethernet cable for MyWireless is a proprietary cable. It is not available anywhere else.

Is there anyone here who has any form of manufacturing business, knows of one, that could manufacture patch antennae and the like for a reduced price? There's money to be made there, I think.

EDIT: I thought a bit more. How about we buy a whole lot of cans from a company that manufactures the appropriate size can (dirt cheap), organise the appropriate pigtails (sortof expensive). Would there be anyone able to organise something like this? I mean... surely totaly COST won't be much more than R 50?

Flashvc you Lailoken ?

Did you used to attend his lans in pta ?

It has come to my attention that some people need longer Ethernet cables than the ones that are supplied.

I can do that too...
