False advertising - Telkom on 5fm...

sigh.

everyone always talks about complaining to the ASA, BCCSA etc about little advertising issues. totally ignorant of the fact that telkom is run by the greedy government who only has one thing in mind - huge profits for the government shareholders. the government also runs ASA/BCCSA, or at least everything goes through some corrupt government official. do you think they're gonna give a damn about a tiny fish in the ocean with a little advertising complaint? i don't.

time to get out your guns, spraypaint, banners and molotov cocktails - it's time for some active armed protesting! :D

if it worked to help end apartheid...

Erm, dude, no, The ASA and BCCSA are independent bodies that govern what content may appear on our national TV and Radio networks. If any content is complained about, they have a tribunal that investigates in accordance with the guidelines outlined, If the complaint is warranted, punishment is meted out (usually punishment = immediate withdrawal of the content). There is no government group or procedure even remotely involved. The tribunal measures the facts and makes a decision.

how fast do think data can travel from here is lets say london is under 100ms?

Just to give you an idea of just how fast data can travel - a recording of a concert held at the Albert Hall and transmitted over the radio will be heard by someone in South Africa before the members of the audience seated in the back row of the concert hall.

The real question is about what quality of data can you get how fast.

Has anything happened

...whenever somebody lodged a complaint or bitched??? now I dont want to sound like im supporting anybody here, but mostly ever 2nd post is a complaint... then there are huge uproars about taken legal action and presenting there case before GOD and his angels, but nothing ever comes of it... am I right or am I completely outta line... not that I really care, but just a thought non the less.

It reminds me of the Bible - remember the scene where Adam and Eve were standing by the tree deciding what to make for dinner, and the snake popped out from between the leaves and offered the poisoned apple?

I think you are confusing the Bible with Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs.

Erm, it does help to complain: A few examples:

1) If it weren't for our complaints, ICASA would not have investigated Telkom ADSL
2) Complaints to the BCCSA: Check out their website and see how many complaints they rule on in favor of the plaintiff. In all these cases, ruling were reache after conclusive evidence was lodged.
3) See how often the rulings go in favor of even just a few complainants. E.g see how often some people complain about Gareth Cliff, and how often he get's into trouble...

1) ICASA - fair enough, yeah the did investigate, and then what... so a waste of time really
2) urrr - Telkom arent really lying, you can play games and download, sure the ping times to international servers are slow but the are going to argue that they have a local gaming servers, true... true, and with downloading, can you download, have you downloaded using ADSL... anything be it a driver from Nvidia or an illegal album via torrent... you have, so basically you dont really have a leg to stand on.
3) Thats Gareth Cliff, they find him guilty for using profanity, and other other crap that old poeple take offence to, not because he cant download on bittorrent using Telkoms ADSL service... "I aint wrong here Walter"

again im not fighting with anyone here, just saying that its a useless cause, and nothing is going to happen... so the quicker we all come to terms with it the better it will be for everyone...

Never knew that, I did, however, know that it takes less time for a data signal to go from NY to London and back, than for a nerve impulse from your toe to reach your brain.

Note: I said NY to London. JHB to London and back (via ADSL), would be about the time it takes for a cigarette butt to bio degrade.

My Point is, everyone has the right to complain. South Africans (the majority of us) that do not earn 6 figure incomes monthly unfortunately don't have too many other tools at our disposal. The bigger thing is that we're just a handful that are complaining. The overwhelming majority of South Africans complain socially only (at a braai or friends place or around the 3 o clock smoke break but only a select few actually go that extra step and complain to authorities that do take stuff and investigate and look into it - albeit slowly, at least something's happening. Daily South Africans take it up the rear end without lube from every major sector and industry in SA. Banks screw us over while Big Life Assurance companies suck us (and our retirement savings) dry, we pay more in service charges on any product anywhere in the world pro-rata, not to mention the rediculous way the government rips us off by NOT kerbing crime - all the while Telkom j**ks off while watching from the sidelines. So I'm sorry if I feel like venting at being f***ed over by Telkom and virtually every other big SA company on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, for every complaint there is always the person or persons that complain that complaining ain't gonna work. Go figure....

yeah...

Again, im not disagreeing with you, I to am victim to the power struggling, money making companies out there... all am sayind is that if the people that are suppose to have the power to do something about it and they cant or not allowed to then, why dont we all just move on... this forum used to be a funking place, now every 2nd post is about...

"I woke up this morning and had an idea, lets sue telkom" ... "False advertising, lets sue telkom" ...

So I figure if you all want to make a real dent in Telkom, why not cancel your ADSL line and get 3G or iBurst... that way you will all have a reason to complain then, at the moment its like those people at your "3 o'clock smoke break" complaining that there jobs suck, but they never actually resign and move on...

That's what a lot of people argue - however, given the begin and end all of Telkom, and how they own the infrastructure (i.e: SAT3 infrastructure + landing points), you're not taking anything away from them. Telkom expect to recoup expensies within a year of rollout, otherwise they simply stop investment. Using 3G or Iburst may sound like a clear cut alternative - but it is not. It's expensive, and the reason it is expensive sits squarely back at Telkom. Telkom provide all Inter-continental bandwidth to all providers in SA. Even Sentech use a large wack of Telkom supplied bandwidth. They own the lines that interconnect the Cell Phone network towers and stations, they own the network connecting service providers. So, whether you like it or not, boycotting one Telkom service will barely make them bat an eyelid.
