Files with AVI extension

I have recieved from time to time movie clips which I am unable to run as they are in AVI format.
Can anybody advise me how to overcome this problem.

I love VLC! Plays almost everything.

depends how it was encoded as well..

search google for xvid codec or go to www.xvid.org and download it from there (not the software, just the codec)

K-Lite mega codec pack ftw, but then again we all have our preferences

personally, I like ffdshow, plays basically anything in WMP.
