Or the IEEE1394 intereface as wiki informs me. Is this a must have in today's technology driven world? Besides camcorders, what else can I reasonably expect to use this for?

In others words is this needed technology for the ordinary man such as yours truly?

I mostly use mine for external hard drives. USB2 has higher speeds on paper but irl firewire 400 has higher sustained speeds. Firewire 800 is of course much faster.

I also on occasion use it to quickly network two computers.

Yet one more reason not to switch to vista. :o
