Hi

I am situated in Selby near JHB CBD. I am using a UTD and it shows 100% signal with and without an external antenna. However, my ping times are in the region of 1000-2000ms with frequent time outs. I'm trying to use this connection for VPN purposes but with this latency it's impossible. I think I'm connecting to Sanlam Centre Base Station. I've tried moving the antenna around and even on the roof. Is it the contention at the base station? I think its my modem's transmitting back to the tower thats the problem?

Please any suggestions asap would be appreciated...I'm pulling my hair out on this one!

thats funny ic seeing as im using a vpn right now, this is kinda what i was talking about in that thread where i said we need iburst mods with iburst, people without an objective viewpoint being mods here influence the content negatively, rather than saying you dont know how to help this guy you say it wont work at all, that he has no way of fixing it when really we all know it will

then 3 months down the line someone looking for objective opinions on iburst reads you comment and says "oh well hes a mod, he must know what hes talking about" and starts thinking vpn wont work on iburst

i wasnt helping you, i was just showing everyone you're not objective enough to moderate this forum and since you dont even have iburst and arent aware of how it might or might not be right now perhaps you should not even post when this guy is looking for help and not a pile of poop ("it wont work on iburst")

amanjee, well we know its not the shaping because VPN is a priority protocol and port on iBurst so that means the problem is between you and the basestaion, you say you have 100% signal but you need to provide a frame error rate as well so we can see all the variables involved in latancy.

Also.. obviously if you have packet fragmentation your pings will suck, so whats your MTU set at?

Common problem with JHB CBD!
This is Tower Nr1!
Take external antenna and try to connect to other Bscc.

Hi

Thanks for comments. Firstly IBurst does work for VPN, I've used it in Soweto (Jabulani base station). There my ping times were consistently around 70ms. Secondly, how do I connect to another base station (i think Forest Hill is also close by)

Thanks guys

Basically.... point the Antennae in another direction.
Install iConnect maybe (bit biased I know :p) then move the antennae around and see what tower you get. Find a better one and give that VPN a try.

Hi

I tired again yesterday and it worked fine (ping times around 200ms). I used iConnect and says I'm connecting to Sanlam. I cannot connect to any other Bscc as I am like 800m away from Sanlam even if I point the antenna to the ground I still connect to Sanlam. I do see Primrose, Kyalami, Northcliff and Forest Hill as available bscc but it's impossible to connect because Sanlam signal is so strong? I just hope I'm not back to square one on Monday when more people are IBursting to that Sanlam tower.

I had a similar problem. OK internet surfing, but because of high latency, Skype would not work. Fixed with a directional antenna designed locally. Latency reduced from 1000's to an average of about 50-100. I'm not a techie, so I don't understand how it worked, but I can tell you that it did work. There is a guy that will come out and test your signal, and then advise you what can be done. If you are like me and you need clever people to help you, then I can honestly say that I rate this chap as being one of the clevers. Don't know if advertising is OK here, but I found assistance on this forum. PM me if you need the guys contact details.
