Gaming on international servers

test with ISDN

I dont play WOW... but was just interested what my pings would be like. Here is the result...

So ISDN truly has better latency to international servers....

But it is strange that the ISDN player's ingame latency is higher than those on unshaped adsl, when it comes to high population servers and high population areas like Iron Forge.

maybe it's got to do with the spare bandwidth? ISDN can only go to 128KB which is fine probably for better in game latency, upsetting as it may be, but takes strain when the data really starts to flow

I was playing unreal tournament last night on SAIX game servers. My ping is around 35 - 40ms when staring at a wall. It remains 35 - 40ms with a couple of players around... however, the moment there are too many players my ISDN starts to bottleneck... and well, my ping goes sky high! I play real time strategy games overseas which dont use too much bandwidth and i get some very respectable pings. Last night on certain gaming servers i was averaging 260ms to the US (east coast) and 200ms to some of the UK servers. I had absolutely no lag whatsoever... but RTS's are more forgiving with latency then most other games.

Unshaped ADSL theoretically should be better by around 20ms or so. Its just way too expensive for me :(

Hope you have fun with WOW and good luck with your latency issues :)

I just noticed something interesting while comparing the 2 traceroute's, ignoring the pings but looking at the actual hostnames.

adsl and isdn follows 2 different routes to international, now that seems irrelavant as probably both routes go over the same underseas cable. Now lets say from the other point of the cable they immediatly go to different hosts and those 2 hosts follows different routes to the server, it seems the isdn people gets routed to a link/host/route with better latency than the one the adsl people get routed through. Is it possible that adsl users get routed over cheaper (with higher latency) links?

hmmm, I think all the ADSL traffic goes via a different route due to the port shaping. Does anyone know how much port shaping affects your latency?
