Gaming speed and latency

I play Red ALert 2 on the ea servers. It does not seem to make much difference with this new adsl. I bought a telkom marconi modem (to my dissapointment). Sometimes it seems as if my isdn was faster for gaming. All this adsl is good for is downloads. I also get difficulty connecting with the adsl to other players. Anybody got a match? I feel like burning something.

I got adsl then
set it all up and connected to battlenet(international b4 passing cap)
and got pings of 1000+,, i almost cried

Yes. I cannot describe how ridiculous this whole setup is. Somebody at telkom did not think this through. Or maybe it is like the other guy said. They want to make the profits and not pay anything.

Hey guys... I keep telling you there is a solution...no lagging.(as my son calls it). One Way Satellite downstream. We have an adsl line as uplink and use Satellite downstream. Works like a dream....no cap and good speed. My son spends most of his time on weekends playing Rogue Spear with the Americans who are now happy too....

I also use adsl uplink with sat downlink on Novaworld.net(Delta Force servers)My ping times are only marginally better, but more stable(no more jumping from 300ms to 6k plus!!)I wish Telkom would get their act together. We pay first world prices for third world service!!!!!

Hi,

I just recently got adsl and i'm experiencing pings of 60-80. Telkom have routed me to durban which I dont understand because it is around 600 km from me in Welkom, whereby if they routed me to jhb which is 200 km and where most of the gaming servers are around locally , would have been much better. Does any1 know a way around this or some tweak tools or anything I could do. I mainly play cstrike.

Some1 told me that if you have a normal adsl modem you can connect to the different routers by dialing a number ? for e.g I can be routed to cape town or durban or jhb, by dialing a specific number..

Can i believe this or is it a bunch of horse ?

It's not true. Your DSL modem can only connect to your exchange. It can't even dial.

I use adsl sharing with 4 people in the house, Battlefield pings are never more than 20!
Counterstrike pings used to be as low as 3 sometimes averaging 10-15 on JHB servers.

I play quite a bit online and share the line with people and still only get capped in the last week of the month. Mind you we keep downloads at bay and only nail telkom in the last two days as they are too slow to initialise the cap. Sometimes you can download 5 gigs before they notice.

My download speeds are always around 50kbytes/sec (using download accelerator) and this includes international downloads.

Kazaa is blocked by telkom (which I think is illegal) but who cares because one can get around that with setting the port to 80 under options firewall so I figured.

I think the service is stupidly capped with both up and down traffic counted into the cap also local and non local bandwidth are counted.

When I Signed up telkom people told me that UP or DOWNstream gets capped at 3 whichever reaches 3gigs first. This is not true.

All in all I think Telkom should get their acts together, and offer a better service with less obvious bullcrap marketing such as saying we only cap international downloads and 3 gigs. Also they say I can use my 56k after I got capped. Ye so I can pay for their stupid phone rates. What an idiotic monopolistic approach is this?
