Blow real hard to get dust out?

This is kinda messed up. I can only think of a bad contact somewhere.

Well it is going in for a professional clean and repasting end of the month so will see what he has to say, maybe he can fix it.

Yes put the original back in. Could understand the change if it was for an SSD but I don't know why you messed up a working PS4 with some second hand HDD. 2.5 inch HDDs typically run even slower than 3.5" ones too so you probably downgraded.

Pretty sure all PS4 HDDs are laptop 2.5" ones.

Anyway it's working again. Put it into rest mode to update and when I booted up again, all was well.

You get different speeds on 2.5", just like you get different speeds on 3.5".
For example A 2.5" WD Blue can hit 6Gb/s where the PS4 Max limit = 5 Gb/s
So 2.5 is not the reason, beside the housing can only fit 2.5"

Suspect he has a dud or older drive.

Hence why I gave my answer. If you CTRL + Z all your actions and now the problem persists, we have to look at the parts that moved.

My bad, I forgot that the PS4 was 2.5” only.

That era I had 3.5” HDDs on PC. Transfer speed is one thing but RPM is another, you don’t get 7200rpm 2.5” drives which is why we were all on 3.5” drives that era as the good ones spin faster.

Edit : Nvm, I’m completely wrong again. There are 7200rpm 2.5” drives now. I blame my memory XD
