Google is funding work to ensure the Windows version of Adobe Systems' Photoshop and other Creative Suite software can run on Linux computers.

For the project, Google is funding programmers at CodeWeavers, a company whose open-source Wine software lets Windows software run on Linux. Wine is a compatibility layer that intercepts a program's Windows commands and converts them to instructions for the Linux kernel and its graphics subsystem.

Yay!!

Google does good things :D

I actually wish they would encourage a proper alternative, don't much like Adobe products, they're very bulky and overpriced

I'm wondering if it wouldn't make more sense to support development of running OSX binaries on Linux. The systems are more alike, so I would imagine the potential is there for more stable operation.

I would also much rather have a native version of <INSERT_FAVOURITE_APP> in Linux, but lets be serious, how many people who earn their living working with images are willing to give up Photoshop (or run it in Wine - it's not even that stable under Windows natively) to run Linux? I'm guessing not that many.

I run PS in a Virtual machine, and yeah I'd be very happy if there was a native linux version. To be fair though, I use PS maybe 8-16 hours a month.

Install wine and use something like winetools or winemaker to set it up. Be aware, these are not click-and-go solutions, they take a bit of time and experimentation to get it right.

Or buy Crossover Linux - they have a fully working 30 day trial.
