I have the Firefox RSS reader extension and it works great.
I have also registered with the Google Reader for RSS feeds.

Now, if I had myADSL as a feed on Firefox, new topics appear straight away, while the google reader is delayed by up to an hour - even though I refresh it.

This says to me that firefox retrieves the new RSS feed XML doc timeously, but google does not - is google caching these? is it my browser? is it Telkom (spit)?

anyone have any ideas? I know I could just use Firefox, but I am interested in adding RSS feeds to my sites and want to know how google works.

Google refreshes on their own schedule.

I use a desktop aggregator as I think FireFox and Google stink when it comes to reading and handling RSS feeds.

I use GreatNews and RSSBandit.

Try Gregarius ... it is a OSS mySQL+PHP RSS server aggregator implementation.
It supports AJAX even ... pretty good ... should answer your queries on how to do it i.r.o you own websites
