Who here really uses the GPS on his/her phone?

As an E90 owner I've got GPS on the phone ... but it seems more of a gimmick than a real useful GPS tool that is practical to use every day. I find it impractical to use when driving ... and I sure don't need GPS for walking in the neighborhood.

What's it useful for? I want to hear what others are doing with it ... maybe I'm missing something here :)
 
I travel in SA and abroad and have used my GPS-Pocket PC, but I would agree that it's not worth the extra bulk if you're not traveling much.
You also need a headset to answer calls while using the GPS phone for navigation.
The Safety Camera POI's have served me well.

Similarly I use the Pocket PC's internet connectivity and email while traveling, but if at home I'd rather use my PC.

I would rather just use my very compact Nokia 6100 when all I need is a phone.

I feel the same, my phone is GPS ready but I use a dedicated GPS unit for navigation
 
While I agree that it is not a several-times-a-day necessity, I use it quite often. For example, on Saturday I had to drop off my daughter at a party for which the number of directions would have exceeded 15, even though only about 5 km's from our house.

I just typed the street address into my Nokia 6110 Navigator and followed the voice instructions. I use a Parrot CK3100 bluetooth car kit to stay on the legal side of the law.

I use it to once or twice a week to navigate to new clients. A GPS makes one confident of getting to a place in time, without getting lost and wasting time on the way.
 
I can see how a dedicated bracket mounted GPS unit can be useful when driving ... but my E90 is not bracket mounted ... so it cannot get proper GPS reception in the car ... and I cannot watch te screen. But maybe I'm missing a simple practical solution here.
 
... and no, prestik on the dash is not the type of simple solution I will consider practical :D
 
You should pay the money and activate the voice navigation. At least the voice navigation needed to be activated (read paid for) on the N95.

VOICE navigation?

I have an N95 and use it a bit for voice navigation if i have to get to places i have never been before.

I also have a generic bracket for the car and it fits quite nicely in it and gets a perfect lock through the windscreen even in horrible weather.

I find it incredibly useful to have a phone with GPS and 3.5G. No, its not a full pc but if you find yourself out and about and lost, having GPS is a god-send.

Once overseas, i got lost and all i needed to fo was flick on the GPS and i was sorted within minutes. Now thats cool.

Why pay?

download Nav4all which gives you free Voice navigation.

Its super easy to use and is really accurate in my experience. Only downside is that with all the new building in SA, a few of the new roads arent on the servers yet.
 
I've had my 6110 Navigator for 1.5 weeks now. I've not really used the GPS navigation per se (except the initial navigation to our corner cafe :) )but already used just the maps twice. Eg. I need to attend a conference shortly. I put in the address of the location, zoomed in, searched for nearby accommodation, clicked the website link of a hotel and I was sorted out. I agree, this process could also have been done on the PC or whatever, but when being out of town the POI's are real handy.

The integrated GPS was a bit expensive up to now (N95 etc) but with the 6110 I think it is worth it. A comparable phone without GPS is only around R300-400 less. So, you decide?
