Graphics cards

I must say again thanks to all the reponses, you have certainly given me allot of resources to read and make a better judgement when the time comes.

There is no peace without war!!!

i have a geforce4 mx 440 and that runs just about all the games on the market, plus its not very exspensive.

curry, i think what u were trying to say is "i have a gefarce4 mx 440 and that CRAWLS in just about all the new games on the market, plus its actually a glorified gf2".

ps. farce - a foolish or meaningless show; ridiculous sham; mockery.

Hehe yeah it was a bit of a sham. I currently have a GF2 (don't laugh) and yeah with current games it SUCKS. This is why I'm getting a shiny new 6800 GT 256MB.

Nvidia very recently (16th !! November) released the 6600 and 6600GT 128mb AGP X8 version http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_6600.html It looks pretty damn good and will be a fair bit cheaper than a full blown 6800.
read a review of the card here http://www.tech-report.com/reviews/2004q4/geforce-6600gtagp/index.x?pg=1
It's compared against ATI's 9800,NV6800 and PCI-e cards. The numbers look good and if they become available here there may just be one under my christmas tree this year!!

Just to add on to what 'Justplain' said, the Geforce 6600 GT are SLI enabled (can connect two of them together) and can apparently (certainly in the states) be bought (2 of them) for one price of a Geforce 6800 vanilla but it equals the performance of that card.

However you'll need the new Nforce4 mobo's to take advantage of the SLI capability.

Yeah, I don't have an nForce mobo so no SLI love for me [;)] I know about the 6600 GT, it's an awesome card for its price but in my case I want a little more kick. Besides I'm getting the GT for a damn good price and it'll last a bit longer than the 6600.

From what I've seen, two 6600GTs will cost a little more than one 6800GT. In some cases the SLI 6600GTs can beat the 6800GT, but from the test results that Anandtech et al recieved, the 6800GT seems like the better option overall. The main advantange (other than bragging rights!) of getting the 6600GTs in SLI, is that you can buy one now, and another in 6 months time or so.

well if you go for the 9800 pro, its really easy to overclock it to XT speeds, all you need to do is fit a Arctic Cooler and DL ATI tool and bobs your uncle. With regards to x800, rather get the VIVO edition, as you can softmod it , bu opening extra pipelines and it will be able to run at XT platinum Edition speeds after you have changed the bios on the card

Just to update you. I finally opted to go for the Gainward 6800GT. I could not got wrong at the price. Axiz direct sold it fo R2940ex, R3300odd inc vat, that is a full grand cheaper than the Gigabyte equivilant and only a few hundred more that the vanilla. I am getting 9800 - 2003 3d marks; 4800 - 2005 3d Marks; this is being hampered heavily by the fact I am only running a 2100+ AMD (1.7GHZ). It is a great card and at that price it is even better. I am getting a 3000+ AMD64 754pin and that should push me through the 10000 and 5000 marks easily.

im sure way over that. 2100 sucky! :) I got amd 64 3000+ 754pin makes a huge difference. You need ram makes a big difference. Ram performs well on a amd 64 for some arb reason

Nice choice James and that's an excellent price, especially for an SA dealer... goes to show what a little shopping around can do!

The reason RAM performs well on an AMD 64 is because the memory controller is built directly into the CPU and not into the Northbridge like Intel (and previous AMD chips). This allows for lower latency between the RAM and CPU and therefore an increase in performance. This doesn't mean a Northbridge solution is inferior. Intel solutions rely on higher memory bandwidth rather than faster timings to achieve better performance (an overclocked Intel solution is definitely nothing to be sneezed at!). Each implementation has benefits under different scenarios. Intel generally performs better in media applications and AMD generally performs better in games. And so concludes the tech lesson for the day :D

ha, intel can't touch the FX-55

...maybe next year...

Yeah it's awesome if you can spare 6-7 grand (or a kidney) to buy it!

Most people purchasing a CPU only have a budget of around 1-2 grand and in this bracket Intel and AMD are fairly equal in terms of price/performance. If you're a gamer though AMD is the better option.

I don't think Intel will catch up next year. Their only hope is if they use Pentium M architecture in their dual core design, but they seem intent on pushing Prescott for some insane reason (is it not hot enough already?). AMD on the other hand still have some headroom left in their current architecture and their initial dual core offerings will probably slap Intel... gonna be an interesting 2005 ;)

About buying from international stores... what if theres a problem with the hardware you buy, do you ship it back? Post it back? Or do you have to go and visit them in person

You can ship it back at your expense and they'll ship a replacement, again at your expense. This is how it works with most places but some may just tell you to get bent and there isn't a lot you can do about it unfortunately. Best thing to do is check various hardware forums and ask people where they buy from internationally and what problems they've had.
