grub option screen not available

Hi MickZA

I totally understand, I am just grateful for your help and guidance'

I have reached the same point as you and have the same 'edit partioin' dialogue box
selected EXT4 and / the size is the same I have not altered that.......do I just tick the box
to format this partition.
If so I assume I do the same procedure for the 'Swap partition' but using swap instead of /.
Then install.

I will await your response before I commit

once again thanks

@ Brentontw...fastboot is not enabled I changed it to normal boot but thanks anyway

Hi again MickZA

Sorry to have to say that the installation completed successfully and my home folder is intact and operational
however the GRUB option screen didn't open again when I did a fresh boot.
I went through the procedures to instal GRUB as per earlier post and that completed with no errors, tried to boot
again and still no Grub options screen.
Not sure where to go now as I can still access Linux with a bit of manoeuvring but that not ideal as it's my wife's
lappy.
I have a sneaky feeling I have an issue with my 'disk drive' so I don't what effect if anything that will have on the proceedings
I would like to hear your opinions so far but as it's week-end maybe nextweek is a good suggestion

Thanks for all so far

# Edit Before I go I have just had a thought, that in order for me to run any disks I have to access
them with some manoeuvring and all the time Windows has loaded so in effect I will have two O/S open.

What actually happens is that Windows is opening as normal and ignoring the the boot sequence but if I open
the charms. PC settings and navigate to BIOS/UEFI I can get in to make changes (though I don't) and as soon as I
exit the disk fires up and then Linux opens or whatever disk I am using, that's the only way I can access Linux
without the GRUB option screen.

Could this be the cause of all these problems (thought for the week-end ) lol

Have a nice w/e
Cheers

Just spotted this in the Mint 18 thread, might be what's causing the problem:

As for UEFI, Mint has no trouble with it so long as you disable the Windows specific Secure Boot. Mint's developers warn you about running Mint on systems with Secure Boot enabled, but I haven't had any trouble with running Mint side-by-side on my Secure Boot enabled Windows systems.

Check this article for disabling secure boot - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn481258.aspx

Hi MickZA

Thanks for that info, very interesting especially Mint 18 and UEFI & BIOS.

Regarding the secure boot, it has been disabled ever since I first loaded Mint 17.1
as a dual boot with Windows 8.1.
The pc would not recognize the disk until I disabled ‘secure boot’ and then I was able
to install and it went well (I still think I may have a ODD issue) however in my searches
there is many references to the same issues and some from Microsoft also as well as the pc
manufactures applying various fail safes to prevent another system being installed, but I’m
sure you know all that but the one I found interesting was from M/S as below link.

Since we last spoke I decided to remove mint completely in the hopes of doing a
fresh install, I managed to removed the partitions ok but I hit a snag with the uninstallation
of the GRUB files in ‘Figure 3’ in the below ‘how to delete grub files’ I get an error.

D:\>ls it gives me the error “not recognized as an internal or external command”
now need to find out about that and then I will try and do a complete new install.

If you have any advice I’m all ears

Hi MickZA

Re-post #27
As I mentioned that I had this issue with the 'D:\>ls....it gives me the error “not recognized as an internal or external command”' and as you know when Mint was installed I lost the 'GRUB option menu' and this is the reason for all this, is it possible that the D:\>ls....is not an error as such but that there is no GRUB files to remove as they have already been removed via Windows, as I do not have any issue with Windows start up and 8.1 is running fine.
If I can boot into a Live Linux Mint disk from power on, I think I will try and do a fresh install again and see what happens, if I can't boot like that I will leave it and check out the drive.

Just wanting your views
Thanks for all your help with this issue ( I will leave you alone now ):)

Hi snowy

Sorry for the delay, but bash commands on Windows? - had me scratching and doing some digging.

Anyway I doubt you'll be be able to follow those instructions before Windows 10 Anniversary Update is released ~ Aug 2 ( http://www.pcworld.com/article/3097049/windows/microsoft-edges-ever-closer-to-shipping-windows-10-anniversary-update-code-with-new-build.html ) unless you're using Insider Preview Win 10.

See this article for more info - http://www.howtogeek.com/249966/how-to-install-and-use-the-linux-bash-shell-on-windows-10/

Hi MickZA

I have to admit I am confused with your post and it's relevance to mine?
maybe I'm missing something.

Cheers
