Guide to update an LG G6 to Android 9 Pie

I have an LG G6 H8703, I got tired of waiting for SA networks to release Pie so I downloaded the UK version of Pie at the link below, did the upgrade and it installed flawlessly, it's an awesome update:​

The link above has the firmware and all the instructions with download links to the LG UP flashing software etc.
You must enable developer mode before flashing the phone.
If you do an "Upgrade" via LG UP you don't lose any data or apps, but backup anything important just in case.

After the upgrade is installed the phone will look like it's hanging on the lg logo, it's not bricked it's just the system optimising, can take up to 20mins.

When I was trying to use LG UP to flash the firmware I kept on getting "error cannot load model", googled it and found this which solved it:

This update gives the G6 a new lease on life, it runs fast and the battery seems great thus far, you also get around a GB or 2 in extra storage space as 9 appears to need less storage. You can pick up a G6 for around R2k these days, which is a great deal for what was a flagship phone released in mid 2017, with 9 installed its a winner, as per the below only the stock camera lets it down.

The only drawback is the camera implementation is still as rubbish as before but the Google Camera Port brings the phone right up to speed, the pics you get with the G6 and Google Camera in HDR Enhanced mode is unreal:

This Gcam works great on Pie, you do need to fiddle with the settings or maybe someone will upload a config for the G6:

Just stumbled on this. Ridiculous how slow LG is with updates, considering that competing devices have been on 9 for a while and is now moving to Android 10. Apart from the camera, any other issues with the update so far?

The update is great, seems decent on battery life aswell. The new multitasking is awesome and likewise the rotate button on the switcher bar thing at the bottom.

Cool. Gonna get mines done. The G6 is still a good phone, pity that the battery is not user replaceable.

If you are using an android pie version that is not your country of region I suggest
you do a rollback to the stock firmware first then after upgrade to your countries official kdz firmware.

I did this and I had lots of things and features missing on my phone.

-Auto-Brightness was buggy
-The phone was slow and ate battery life
-Do Not disturb didn't work
- Wifi Network calling didn't work
- Bluetooth pairing with the car would cut and hands-free calling didn't work
- Whatsapp calling was bad.

Didn't end up flashing the phone after all. Received the OTA update on 28 January.

Not on topic but here I go:

Personally I hate LG or Lucky Goldstar products. Why?

Because I have been fixing their CRT since 1991. They built sets that had great pictures. Cool. Set goes faulty... I have to repair. LG seems to have an infinite number of people designing their PCB's and every chassis is unique with the spares you can use to repair it. Every LOPTX on an LG chassis that is supposed to be the same on it's identical counterpart...is different. I've burned my fingers countless times trying this. Make no mistake, LG produced some CRT with great pictures... but as a technician dealing with repairing the stuff.. it's a nightmare.

LG make it as difficult as possible to repair their stuff. And for me that's a no no. What they want is for the consumer/customer to throw it away when it breaks.

I've kept Chinese sets costing half the price and a picture quality 10% less going for longer. And still do. I hate LG from a technical repair side. Nightmare.

I won't touch anything LG. Microwave, washing machine, CD player or whatever for my own personal use. I hate the fact that they do thing's the way they do.

They trying to be a Rolls Royce in a Datsun world. Nope.
