Hack Attack: Top 10 Ubuntu apps and tweaks

For one thing - something that makes initiating pppoe less of a mission.

pppoe is dam easy on ubuntu!! what help do you need?

you should play around with gdesklets can do some really fun stuff with them

Thanks.

I've installed rp-pppoe - finally - but when I connect it still shows whatever IP the router is using instead of the pppoe connection's one.

LOL

SimplyMEPIS Linux - the latest version is based on Ubuntu 6.06 - and basically installs itself. I'm running it at home, and prefer it to Ubuntu.

I'm tempted to load windoze on the bloody thing - but I wont.

Perhaps I'll give SimplyMEPIS a try next.

I've never seen an os that needs so many updates as Ubuntu.

Remeber Windows XP ? :D
I'm already downloading the XP updates anyway. Trying to download updates for ubuntu via my 24/7 uunet account is impossible which is why I wanted to be able initiate a pppoe connection when necessary.

I'm not a complete idiot* when it comes to computers so I have to wonder how ready for mainstream use Ubuntu really is. Do you think Ubuntu is there or still getting there?

* obviously open to debate but we'll leave that for a future discussion :p

Or install vmware, and run windows on Linux in a box, where it's supposed to be in the first place.

forget ubuntu use gentoo, portage is the easiest way to install and download things that u need

I would recommend against Gentoo just because of the install (otherwise its ace), Ubuntu is far better for beginners

www.ubuntuforums.org ask there, no need to change your distro.

Heres something you want to search there as well: compiz and xgl. Theres a gazillion how-to`s on the site

Err... Arcadies... um... all distro`s have port (from BSD) or in the case of gentoo, portage like systems. I run:

- apt-get
- adept
- synaptic packet manager
- kpackage
- and the debian one... I forget its name, its mostly command line.

You CANT get simpler than Adept. Just make sure you have sound and cool sources lists
