Have anyone noticed?

Out of curiosity, i have been doing some calculations this past few days since i got my virgin mobile to connect to web.

THis is what i have done.
Using the following data counters::

Sony v600 i
Sony mobile networking wizzard
Windows default counter
Netlimiter 2 Pro

And with the assumption that i KB is 1024 bytes and 1MB is 1024KB.

Using the data counters, a stopwatch and checking my balance before and after every connection, i came to the following conclusions.

When browsing wap with virgin i pay about R0.55/MB
When Browsing the internet i pay about R0.35/MB
When downloading content on web i pay about R0.50/MB

I dont know if anyone else noticed this, BUT is it possible that with virgin we get cheaper rates for surfing local sites? Thus the 35c/MB?

I am not complaining, or questioning, just wondered if anyone else noticed this?

I haven't notice anything like that yet. I will monitor it during next week and see if it's true. If it is then it's funny that they don't mention it on the website because that will be a big PLUS for them as well.

i only monitored about 10meg thus far, but it looks good, as according to these counters voda/mtn usually overcharge

The increased charge you are seeing for WAP sessions may have something to do with the way VM rounds up to the nearest unit of data that you pay for. Many WAP sessions will cost more due to the smaller units a session normally lasts.

I don't know why a web browsing session would be cheaper but may have something to do with compression of transmitted data? Are you sure you accounted for all the data?

if i run a test on these type of things i turn images off. i turn everything off that might be missed by a data counter... i am now surfing wap sites on pc to see if that makes a diff

I surfed only local sites up to 3.157 million bytes and disconnected. So divide by 1024 squared to get 3.01 MB. I payed R1.41, so I was undercharged just slightly.

But undercharged none the less @47c/MB then... it varies for me, but on voda and mtn both i was always overcharged according to data counters. Could it be that virgin have a different way of calculating data?

Does voda/mtn realy overcharge? Or is it just that they are rounding your usgae upwards?

All the networks round towards the nearest cent so rounding shouldn't make a difference. The data counter on the phone itself should be the most accurate as it says the amount of data actually sent or received. Other counters may also include data sent to and from the modem itself and not over the network. Like in windows itself in says I received 270bytes when connected but on my phone it says 0bytes.

I think what is happening is that they take a certain amount when you connect and then take more when you used that up. You could have used this on Vodacom to download just under 400,000bytes in under ten minutes and removing your battery without disconnecting and you wouldn't have been charged. Virgin have sometimes adjusted my balance after I checked it again hours later. Check your balance an hour or so after you're disconnected to know how much they really charged you.

I use an average of all 4 counters, My phones counter is sometimes higher than the other 3.
