Help needed with FTP

I am using CuteFTP to update my webspace with MWeb - have not done this for a while. I am getting an error "503 No PORT command issued first" when I try to upload files. I can connect fine, delete, change directory but when I try to upload - bang in my face.
I have also tried SmartFTP - getting the same answer.
OP = XP Pro sp2 up to date
sygate firewall
AVG free

Please HELP

This problem can be resolved by turning off the Passive Mode option.

Tools > Settings > Connection > Data Connection -> "Mode".
