Home Affairs or Not?

Tagging on as I'm in the same boat.

How long does it take to get a passport at the banks (FNB)

In the UK it's taking 6-12 months minimum to get a passport renewed at the SA high commision. It's a complete joke - I've been trying for 2 months just to get an appointment so I can apply. So it's far easier/quicker just to have a holiday back in SA and apply for a renewal. Unless it's going to take weeks and weeks :(

It seems banks is the way to go ... but you must still be a member or account owner of said banks. There is also a limit on which banks do this. It is not done by all. Do a google search to see which are doing it. Also ID and Passport can be done on the same visit from what I have been told by Nedbank but it may vary between banks ... I don't know.

Quick question when making the application for ID card. It is my first ID CARD as I only have the little green booklet. Would this therefore be a re-issue or new application. I assume re-issue but want to make sure

How long in advance do you (can you) need to book at appointment? I want to book ahead of time so when I arrive back in SA I can apply the same day.

another quick question: is it ok to put in your ACTUAL address where we live now (currently in the UK) or best to put in a family address (in South Africa) instead?

Look I'm not advocating you commit fraud or do anything illegal at all. All I am saying is that the people I know who wanted to apply with an overseas affidavit as proof of residence were given a lot more hassle than people I know who used local proof of residence. A woman I know was told to apply at the consulate but the official "made an exception" for her.

For me: It took me less than a week from application online with a bank to actually getting the passport in my hand. My ID card took about 10-11 days. I had to open a standard bank account specifically for that. That was perfectly fine but what took an age was the fact there was an error on the HA system saying I had an old application open on their old system and HA has no real customer support.

Good luck.

Hi guys, I have now accessed the online forms and have completed all of it but it will not allow me to sign and declare the form so I cannot move onto the next steps ... any advice?

You do not require proof of residence to apply for or renew your ID or passport.

Yoh the process was super quick … so through RMB/FNB got my passport in under a week from the appointment date …

It really has nothing to do with FNB or RMB. They just rent the office space to Home Affairs. They have nothing to do with the actual process.
