Honeycomb do you need one yet?

to sum it up, its nothing more than a cool toy :)
gone are yoyos, gummy bears and tamagotchis :) Its tablets!

I suppose that you could say that.

But I recently went on an extended overseas trip with nothing but my tablet, and it was invaluable.

And try to read some newspapers on a decent tablet using Pressreader - you just cannot do that on a notebook!

And like elimentals said, zinio is awesome. Stuff, T3, FHM, menshealth, Car etc all available for online purchase. Price is a little expensive, as I thought since there is no need to print we could get them for cheap.

Quite agree with that, the pricing models are a major problem.

One tends to skim and read more on a tablet, and, quite apart from the print cost issue, each copy is typically only read by one person where paper copies are usually read by a few readers.

I believe that an electronic newspaper should not sell for more than R5 per copy, some for less.

Being more of a comic book reader I love my Komik, Comics with DC titles and Graphicly Comics for the indie titles.

if i could do everything on a tablet, I would prefer it to be 'instead of'
laptops are so last season :)

I could possibly live without a notebook, but would then still need my i7 desktop "war-horse" !

Sometimes you just need the power..

I find Zinio to be awesome and very affordable. Stuff UK magazine sells for R80 at CNA. I get it on Zinio for R27. One example. You won't save on local mags but def on overseas ones. Reading magazines on my iPad is pure bliss. I really cannot understand those questioning the value of pads.

Makes sense, let us tech junkies sort out the tablets 1st :)

and On that I mailed off a couple of bug reports already, and in communication with some of the developers sorting out some issues on some apps I been having. Like I mentioned before its the same as the phone market, and by the end of the year the picture will change again.

Also I really believe the Android market should have a separate Honeycomb section to point out what apps actually fit into the UI vs that stretched look.

When I can get a reasonable second generation ten inch tablet on contract with 250 MB data for R300 pm then I will jump in... I love the tablet thing for consuming digital media but not at a higher price than a notebook.

Eating gingerbread off my Galaxy S, baked by Darky.

Only getting my Keyboard next week so will see how that goes, but as a stand alone the tablet is basically they same as the Xoom well it has a working Micro SD so its 1 better.

Acer iconia pad: Working USB Host + SD card no 3G, HDMI out
Samsung: 1 with SD the other doesn't, both will have USB host via adaptions both with 3G
Xoom: SD card(Not working), Host USB with 3G and wifi only models, HDMI out
ASUS Transformer: HDMI out, Micro SD and no 3G yet(3G models expected in August)
On ASUS keyboard dock: USB host x 2, SD, extra battery life.

Other Names to look out for. Toshiba will probably sell via Mustek so will compete in price, Also Lenovo Lepad might be interesting as the tablet is the screen of a Windows 7 PC.

So it all will depend on how you see the device, or what you plan on doing with it.

I have to say, this is the sort of news that makes me a bit nervous about taking the plunge.

I don't want to shell out R4,000+ for a Honeycomb tablet, and end up buying the tablet equivalent of a Betamax.

I know what you mean but I honestly dont think that is going to happen, its way to early for that and there is way to much money being pumped into it. Both Betamax and HD DVD failed because of one thing, they could not compete on price. Yes I know you dont see cheap Honeycomb tablets out now but the flood is coming. Google did not open the code for Honeycomb as its not ready for every Chinese knok-off co to roll out their versions.

For the cheap ones to come rolling in you need the code to be open and that will be Ice cream sandwich. right now the Samsung, Asus and Motorola's are riding the wave hard(High Prices), and I dont blame them, they have to get return on investments (R&D). Unlike phones that need to be approved by carriers before sales, when the tablet code comes out every Tom, Dick and Harry or shall I say Ton, San and Lok will be able to make and sell tablets. You can see examples of this on the R1000 7" Android 2.2 tablets that is out already.

Also if you look at the tech in Android@Home and Android ADK, there will be many more toys coming.

Edit: You will be shocked if you see what the actual landed costs is of the ASUS Eee pads are. Let me just say think just over Chinese knock off price ;)
