There is an open network at the mall here, however nobody seems to know anything about it, there is no WEP key set, however there is no DHCP server either, so we can't work out how to connect our laptops to it, other than guessing the IP's we need to use, does anyone know how to obtain information from a open AP?

it might be filtering MAC addresses. Which (apparently from what I read on the web) is easily sniffed with certain software.

Have you tried connecting via a pppoe "dialup" ?

1. Use Netsumbler to detect the ESSID and channel number.
2. Turn off all networking software on your computer if you don't want to create suspision.
3. Connect to it with some bogus IP address.
4. Run WinDump, e.g. WinDump -n -i N. where N is the typically 1 or 2.
5. Look for IPs like192.168.X.X or 10.X.X.X, and choose a similar one.

aaah, nicroets, thats just what i'm looking for
