If you don't do that correcctly and update all the serialised string lengths then you're going to get caught out at some point

Hence why I do not use plugins.

I want to use wordpress for one reason.

Give the client access as a editor/author to change only text on certain pages.

The rest of the site will be done via hand coded themes from scratch like I do now.

I hear what you're saying but it's way quicker to use a slider plugin than try code one from scratch making sure that it's responsive, can handle text overlays and have the possibility of doing video too.
