iBurst no good for VoIP boxes/Vonage

Have tried iburst here on a vonage viop box...problem is that to receive calls you have to have a CONSTANT Broadband connection to the vonage server.

iburst technology alocates spare b/w to you when you want connectivity and this goes down to <10 kbps when the iburst box is idle....the vonage server assumes you are disconnected, so you cant receive (or MAKE) calls.

You have to reset each time.

Pity.

I would think the latency is the problem with iBurst ?
voip definately requires a reasonably steady connection to run smoothly, considering it has to be a direct 2 way flow of data, without any streaming or caching.

I have been testing a P2P Voip solution (pretty similar to Skype) on Iburst, and found the latency to be a killer. I am close to a tower and have full strength connection, the latency becomes manageable, just. But if I move away from the towers it is useless.

I would be very interested to hear if any any one has tested Skype successfully on Iburst.

'Broad" when you are connected and the connection is live, what is the quality of the call like, when you make an outbound call?

I am using a PC card (not the UTD) and have found this thing goes to sleep even when I am reading web pages. I have to bring up Ping Command to wake it up quickly! Spoke with someone at WBS and he stated they had a problem with Modems going to sleep in the initial testing stages, but thought they had solved this.

Interesting, that sounds like this [post=154996]known to iBursters problem, but unknown to WBS[/post], if your dozy-UTC fits the Burst-i please let me know.

IC, thanks. I tried the burst-I and it seems to make some difference. My results are still very slow (compared to others I have seen here) and this is most likely my location.

I have also experienced the upload speed being 0 !! And this started couple of days ago. The more I test the modem the more I am convinced there may be a problem -with it 'falling asleep' I had been using a diff ping test, but the burst-I might be better.

I seem to be getting better upload speeds than download! This is with pinging iburst in background.

I have used skype with great success, however the dead idle issue is a problem. Its very frustrating to have to climb from 0-100kps when browsing, It should have a functional base, eg 2-3kbs. This is atleast enough to have something happen before your bandwidth picks up. This is more noticible with IRC & VOIP & IM clients, where you are not always receiving data.

I have tested many VoIP providers using Iburst and have found one great product from Vocall. There SIP authentication never drops and the quality peer to peer or to pstn is as fantastic.

behnke, what base-station(s) have you tested iBurst & VoIP on?

Skype wise I've used iBurst to IBurst, which obviously worked 100%. Tested on Roodepoort, Northcliff and I think North Riding Tower.

iBurst to 64k ISDN worked perfectly. Crystal Clear.
iBurst to Sentech 512K.... hmmm.... absolutely useless. The latency between the two networks is about 8000ms at times.

iBurst to 512k, 384k ADSL was also fine.
iBurst to 64K Diginet also works 100's.

I have been using Skpye quite a bit for calls to England. Works like a charm. Quality varies at times, but exercising proper manners (one person speaking at a time) solves the problem quite well. Latency does sometimes get quite bad, but still it is tolerable. The person on the other side is running a 2mb BT ADSL line...
