IM client on mobile: Wireless Village

Just got myself E1000 this week, all the nightmares I read on 3g.co.uk came true. Was on a verge of swapping it for a v800, but after reading the reviews, I realized the same problems are experienced: non-existant battery life, mp3/mp4 video encoding problem...

Something (important) missing in my phone is the IM wireless village client that suppose to be built-in. What happened? :eek:

Apparently the new 6680 also has an IM. I guess that is disabled as well?

Any idea how to activate it/alternatives?

On a side note, built-in email client works like a beauty :cool: . Yahoo! Gmail even IMAP accounts works perfectly along with autochecking. The only thing missing is asian language support so I can read the family/friend emails, sigh...
 
Hi Ms0505.......welcome to the forum, you can download a good instant messenger for your phone from www.agilemobile.com, if you can browse from your phone its much easier. pm me if you need any help
 
Does AgileMessenger work on the Moto E1000? Their site support the Moto A1000 and A925, which are both Symbian devices. Symbian devices have an advantage, since they support C++ applications, which are a lot more powerfull than Java (non-smartphones applications).

The 6680 is a Symbian device, and should be able to run AgileMessenger.

The Instant Messaging service that comes with the phones (Wireless Village), AFAIK, needs to be supported by the network provider. This is a problem, since it would cut into their SMS revenues, which I imagine is quite a lot. Perhaps V3G can give more accurate information?

Your best bet is to look at www.mxit.co.za - a SA company that is currently developing IM software for Java phones. They look promising, and also support Java phones and Yahoo, ICQ, MSN etc.
 
Considering that Skype are about to launch a client for Symbian Series 60, me thinks it would be silly not to make sure that you buy a Series 60 3G phone if you are into the whole IM and VoIP thing...

But, besides the point. The networks will protect their SMS revenue at all costs. Its the most expensive form of data transmission out there, and they make huge $$$ on this service. Witness the huge revenues being made by 35050 and the like and you will understand why the networks are so keen to protect this revenue stream...
 
You can also try IM+. Seems to work fairly well on the V800. It does cost $20, but you can try the trial version first. Supports MSN, Yahoo, ICQ and others.

I found that MXIT generates the least amount of GPRS/3G data - thus saving you money. However, this is when you use their own messaging server - it would probably increase when you switch to Yahoo, ICQ, MSN etc.

Agilemobile - Symbian & PocketPC only
MXit - Both version have connection problems. Will keep trying.

Will keep looking in spare time. In the mean time, the phone lasted whole day without dropping a single bar today (~= 12 hours), around 10 minutes of calls, a few sms/mms.

Possible reason in this dramatic improvement: Minimum cell switching -- it was left at home whole day, attached to the 3G service.
 
Ok got mxit to work on v800. Took a few tries but eventually managed to get my yahoo log on details registered, and added a few yahoo contacts. Able to send and recieve messages to yahoo contacts. I find that sometimes i have to start the application a few times before everything connects.
Is it possible to have it running in the background, so one can do other things with the phone?
As an aside got the v800 on friday last. Was very suprised to find 3g coverage at home as according to the coverage map and 082155 i am nowhere near a 3g bs. Am getting about 240kbps download on 3g and a steady 50-60kbps on gprs, using the v800 as a modem connected via the usb cable. The only down is the pathetic battery life, but as i got the phone basically to use as a modem my initial experience is better than expected.
 
They are having some problems every now and then, but usually when I email them I get a response real quick which usually explains what is wrong. All in all, I can't really complain since they offer the service for free... :D

I don't think the V800 can do multi-tasking, which you basically need for keeping it in the background. However, since they give you a miss-call, I usually only log into it when I actually received something/want to reply. I use the service as an SMS replacement with one or two friends.

Perhaps you can tell me: do they miss-call you for Yahoo incoming messages as well?
 
Hi ebendl as to your question i am not sure as i only got it up and running last night and have not fiddled much. That seems quite a good idea with the missed call and i remember something about it on signing up so will investigate some more.


Update.
Does not seem to send a missed call if offline which is a bit of a bummer as there is no way to "raise" someone if they are offline.

IM+ works nice on my 7210, my 6600 is just full of crap, iT DONT want to connect to the net, it dont want to work with agile, shyt symbian phone, maybe I must just leave the symbian OS,

Mmm... worked fine on mine (IM+) Tried using a Vodacom & CellC SIM.
 
mxit works great,still a few bugs, but i've been using it for months, saves stackloads of money for sms'ng woman! and keeping in touch with the office via msn messenger, they only miss call you if you get a message from a mxit user, not a messenger client!
