South Africa is the continent's most digitally advanced market, and also the market most heavily targeted by cybercriminals, accounting for 92% of all ransomware detections.

Since the beginning of 2025, an increasing number of notable South African government institutions and private companies have faced serious disruptions due to ransomware attacks.
