Basically, it seems the hype of the ADSL regs is just that...hype. There's no real improvement.

Small comparison reveals that for about a R1000-00 with infinitcall and ISDN2a you can get about 25gb intl unshaped per month.

Still not bad (obviously could be way better and faster) but compared to ADSL with the cap, the confusion of local bandwith free/cost and ISP confusion..for now if you're an ISDN2a user I wouldn't recommend moving over to ADSL just yet. Unless you're a gamer and can live with the cap and never download stuff.

That's my problem atm, I’m a 'heavy' downloader. 30GB a month just is not enough for me, sorry, 3GB International-lol I need WAY more than that,27GB Local- need about +-100GB more.

Didn’t they stop new subscribers to the InfinitCall service?

384K ADSL line rental is R245, a 5gig cap from www.goal.co.za will cost R228 from 1st of October (apparently they have a softcap after the initial cap, basically giving slow speed *56K +-* for another 20odd gigs.)

R100(basic phone line rental)+R245(384K ADSL line rental)+R228(ISP)
Equils : R573

If you take the 10gig account it will set you back another R171 (for extra 5gigs of international.. thats not bad)

So 10gig + softcap 20gig(slowed down) will still cost you less than R800

(Above is nice if you like to play games/download etc..etc and still want to browse the rest of the month, or download slower after the 1st 5gig/10gig cap) *56K = 4kb to 5kb per sec download rate, Dailup speeds*

<Even downloading at 5kb per sec constantly u would never be able to max out your 20gig softcap on 56K> (max 18mb per hour, 432mb per day, 13.2gig per month)

If u compare normal dailup costs. R100(line rental)+R79(ISP)+R65(Infinite call)*i'm guessing on infinite call price. i know it was that amount when i had 56K internet*

R100+79+R65 = R244 minimum
Now add at least R120 worth of calls for dailing up *12 dailups at R8 a shot*(with dailup it could even be more. since you sometimes disconnect.. and dail again)

Dailup 56K uncapped *callmore internet - non 24/7* (basically weekends and after 7pm during weekdays)
Equils : R364 Minimum

So 384K ADSL with 5gig cap / Slowed down speed of 56K softcap
versus normal Dailup 56K (non 24/7 uncapped) comes down to :

R573 vs R364

Sure ISDN is a little faster than 56K internet, but its still "Callmore internet".

ISDN will set you back, R100(linerental)+R200(ISDN Line rental)+ISP(R110)+R65(Infinite call) = R475

Not even including a single dailup yet.. so with ISDN you can add also the R120 worth of dailing up, or even a R240 if you connect twice to get 128K(but then isp costs are R190 also)

So for the same time online ISDN will then cost (Approx..)
R475+R120= R595 (64K ISDN Single connect)
R555+R240=R795 (128K ISDN , Dual connect)

With ISDN 64K you can download at 7-8kb per second constantly.
If your online every nite after 7pm, and even the whole of the weekends.

48hours(weekdays Monday to Thursday) + 60 hours(Weekend begins Friday nite at 7pm till Monday morning 7am)
Total of 108hours per week (5 connections per week)

At max speed, 8kb per sec you'll get
8*60*60*108 = 3110mb per week (28,8mb per hour)
or 12,4gigs per month

On 128K u could do 24.8gigs at max

That's exactly my view on ISDN vs. ADSL.

I'm on ISDN 128K and I download roughly 25GB per month. I haven't gotten disconnected for a VERY long time, and I pay roughly R1000 per month for everything. And I'm very happy with my 25GB monthly downloads, even if it's hella slow.

So until ADSL becomes worth it. In other words, when I can pay roughly R1000 or less, and have unshaped ADSL with a 40GB cap or higher, then I'll switch over to ADSL even if it's 348K ADSL - it's faster than 128K.

So I'll wait till that happens....even it will be forever and ever.

:D Yep, I'm in the same boat! My mule pulls slow but it pulls hard;)

I've even considered the uncapped IS but then it your bill starts heading in the R2000-00 region. Not quite worth it for dwnlds imho.

I'm hoping that Neotel will come up with a fast, cheap more gigs (30gb+) unshaped account by mid 2007. That'll be awesome!

Thing is I've tried 3g, edge, gprs, Sentech, diginet and have a 1024 connection I use for my work but at the end of the day 128k ISDN (wif infinitcall) is still the best. Its stable (90% of the time), unshaped, intl and still way more reliable than ADSL.

SO HERE'S TO HAPPY DWNLDS :D

Yeah, I'm also hoping Neotel bring something different to the table. Will also be looking into ADSL with Neotel.

But I think even so...once Neotel starts offering services to it's customers, I'm still switching over to Neotel ISDN...if it's offered. Just to spite Telkom.

heh ISDN != ADSL, you don't pay twice for the same line ;). For residential customers, the line rental is < R200
- ISDN2 (Including NT1 & Access) 166.52
- ISDN2a (Including NT2a/b & Access) 176.40
(price includes vat)

Not even including a single dailup yet.. so with ISDN you can add also the R120 worth of dailing up, or even a R240 if you connect twice to get 128K(but then isp costs are R190 also)
You can get dual ISDN dialups for less than R100, or you can get a 56k telkom dialup, it allows multiplexing. Unless they've fixed that by now.

So for the same time online ISDN will then cost (Approx..)
R475+R120= R595 (64K ISDN Single connect)
R555+R240=R795 (128K ISDN , Dual connect)
Guessing your figures will still be more or less correct though. Infinite call charges have gone up, R67.18 / month. Also, the price is capped at R10.65 now, not R8

So from these calculations, I am paying about:-

ISDN 2a Line Rental:- R 177
InfiniCall:- R 67
Calls Made (dual call):- R 22 (R11 x2) x 5 nights (Mon-Fri) x 4 weeks (per month) = R 440
ISP Charges:- R 150

Total = R 834

Can I get 512K Unshaped ADSL with a 30GB cap for that price?

OK, I know that it's faster than 128K and 24/7....but still Telkom is just frakking ridiculous with prices, anyway.
