Just Officially Moved to Linux (Experiences)

They are the same. They just come natively with different DE's. You can easily change the DE on Ubuntu to whatever floats your boat.

With the level of unity integration it's becoming hard to excise the tentacles these days, you are better off starting with one of the other versions.

I agree wholeheartedly. Mint wif Mate is my weapon of choice.

Be careful with doing the update today (Ubuntu or MATE) - a few PC's have lost their login screens after a reset.

Yeah, I upgraded to 17.2 (Or something) on the weekend. Was fine till I rebooted and came with numerous error. Did a manual fsck and fixed them and login screen came back.

so, as noob as i am, i was this windows fanatic , but as stated from OP's post, windows 10 is just... meh, so i decided to look into Ubuntu , as i have had a macbook, which was just ... not for me.., , and have never even installed Linux, i decided to just go for it, but still have no idea what the flip is going on, do you guys perhaps have "Ubuntu for noobs" forums i can check out ? I have been having troubles with my permissions in Samba, and decided to halt my curiosity before i continue this very interesting journey, it would be much appreciated if you could direct me in the right direction, i have gone through alot of forums about ubuntu , but only a few that explains it clearly for nooblets like me , i am currently set up my laptop for dual-boot with Win10 and Ubuntu , but only have V14, as it suggested i need to not upgrade due to hardware limitations.

Welcome to the minefield!

For me it's been a great journey. If nothing else I've become the forum searching specialist. I've found that the good thing about Linux and the world of open source freedom is that there is always someone that will help you if you ask for it. So ask.

I learned the hard way that you should do backups. It's easy to screw things up if you like to (blindly) dabble, like me!

Thanks! see, that is why i need to gain that knowledge first, as i too like too 'dabble' , first things first, i need to join Ubuntu on my windows homegroup, or just at least get to gain access to the shares, so i have installed Samba, and need to change "Workgroup=WORKGROUP" to "=HOMEGROUP" in the config but get a permission denied , i am using the default gedit , must i use another program? i have no clue in to troubleshooting this.

Thanks for the backups tip , i will keep in mind that i shall do my backups on a regular basis

Try opening the config file with sudo gedit.
