Kia to triple European EV production as demand ramps up

Kia recently launched its first all-electric vehicle produced in Europe, the EV4, at its Zilina plant in Slovakia, and the company's CEO announced that it plans to increase the BEV production on the Old Continent threefold in the next two years.

Kia's Zilina factory has a production capacity of around 320,000 vehicles annually, and this number can be pushed to 350,000 if it works overtime. By 2027, the Korean automaker plans to produce more than 80,000 EV4 units and 100,000 EV2 units at the plant.

Kia's ultimate goal is to increase production of the EV2 and EV4 vehicles to 100,000 units each globally by 2027. This will be enough to keep its global supply chain stocked and make the models profitable.

Kia SA boss ‘not scared’ to launch EVs

The head of Kia South Africa says he’s “not scared” to launch EVs locally, suggesting there’s a chance the EV3 – and perhaps others – will hit the market in 2026…

- Kia SA CEO confirms EVs are “definitely on the radar”
- EV3 looks the most likely to launch locally in 2026
- Local boss currently driving EV5 homologation unit

Will 2026 be the year Kia South Africa officially enters the local market’s new-energy vehicle (NEV) space? Well, the brand’s local boss says he’s “not scared” to launch electric vehicles (EVs) in Mzansi, suggesting the EV3 might join the local market in 2026.

Paul Turnbull, Chief Executive Officer of Kia South Africa since July 2024, made the comments during an interview conducted in Cars.co.za’s custom-built podcast booth at Naamsa’s South African Auto Week 2025 in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape at the start of October.

“There are 6 new [Kia SA] model launches lined up for next year [2026]. The question is, do we bring the EV in or not? We’ve got the EV3, the EV5 and the EV9. So, those 3 are a possibility – [most] probably the EV3, because it’s the least expensive,” he told us.

Turnbull also mentioned the new EV2 “that’s being launched worldwide soon” (having already been previewed by the EV2 Concept) as well as the upcoming fully electric version of the Indian-built (and SA-bound) Syros. Interestingly, Turnbull’s daily drive is an EV5 that Kia South Africa imported as a homologation unit.

Kia teases a hotter EV4 GT, but patience is required

Kia is not sitting still. Fresh off the success of its new EV3 and the large EV9 electric SUV, the Korean automaker is already planning its next performance move. The company is aggressively expanding its lineup of electric cars, and it seems no new model is safe from getting a high-performance "GT" badge.

The latest model in the spotlight is the Kia EV4, an electric car so new it has barely launched in Europe. Yet, Kia is already teasing the high-horsepower Kia EV4 GT variant, set for a 2026 debut. The "GT" name is serious business for Kia's electric cars. It's not just a sticker package.

The brand's current performance star is the EV6 GT, a crossover that quietly delivers a massive 641 horsepower. That's more power than many gasoline-powered supercars. Kia is also preparing to launch a GT version of its three-row EV9 SUV, which is expected to pack 501 horsepower. This sets a very high bar for the new, smaller EV4 GT.

To build excitement, Kia has released images of an EV4 GT prototype. The car is covered in a loud camouflage called the "GT Wrap." This black and neon-green digital pattern is designed to look like motion blur and, according to Kia, captures the "emotionality" of its performance models. This wrap isn't a one-time stunt, either. Kia plans to use this distinctive camouflage on all its future GT test cars, making them easy to spot.
