I worked as a 2/3rd line support engineer in London for almost five years and after unpacking & fixing hundreds of Dells, HPs, Gateways, Compaqs & IBMs, you see what these companies deem to be 'quality' hardware.

Cheapest parts & biggest profits = how big corporations operate.

*I must stress, however, that I was very impressed with Compaq's (now HP) servers. Very good hardware & design - have built a few Compaq server racks.
 
Get a Macbook

For that price you can't beat the specs.

If Intel, Kingmax, Seagate, SoundBlaster, NVidia or ATI is the "cheapest" technology, I'll most definitely install it in any PC or laptop - beats the living sh1ts out of most other brands and is widely used in Dell equipment! :D
and 7200rpm SATA is available in Dell Laptops...

And seeing that money's not an object, get me one too... :rolleyes:

I got a HP-compaq laptop! Its perfect...cept for one problem
It gets real hot when i use it on uneven, soft surfaces(eg couch, lap, bed)
I would recommend HP-Compaq...but it wasnt part of the option :p

ATI, Nvidia, Soundblaster? Are you nuts?

On the normal Dell you will get Intel onboard graphics + cheap onboard sound. You're obviously thinking Alienware, but that's Dell's ultra-expensive division.

hhhmmm...you just confirmed what I said in an earlier post... shows the depth .... you don't appear to know what Dell is doing and offering .... or maybe not too up to date with the latest hardware and options Dell is supplying in their machines (in light of the hardware support engineer stint for a couple of years on various vendors) ... :rolleyes:

anyway, I know what I know, bygones :D

hhhmmm, I can't believe I missed this one.... if you want to be ripped a new one yes... go for it.

and Yes, you can beat the specs on a MAC and most likely at an even better price.

I have been doing some price checking (read quotes) over the last couple of weeks and the fact is the MAC is expensive and the specs are often behind on what is available in other laptops.

If you're super rich go ahead but if I was super rich I wouldn't even touch a laptop :). The problem is that those are first generation new DVD format machines which means, 1. They're way overpriced. 2. These drives will have issues. So 6 months down the line when every retailer has at least one HD-DVD/BD model, your overpriced first gen machine will feel - awkward (at best).

But you're running MacOs instead of Windoze XP....Vista ... whatever bugware M$ comes up with. I myself am happy with my Acer Travelmate 8104
purchased last year in Singapore within days of release for half the local SA price, it was R22.000
when it first arrived here a month or 2 later.
 
The king of all notebooks is the Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook Q2010 Executive.
At R27 000 excluding VAT, it's a monster machine!!

Monster machine? :rolleyes: You must have a different classification than I have for a "monster machine". There are machines available for twice the specs on this one, some areas even 4x, at the same price, probably even cheaper.

This notebook will be great for mobility (12.1" TFT and 1kg) and connectivity (BT, UMTS, WiFi) but it will suck balls with gaming or doing some performance intensive tasks (1.2Ghz Centrino, 533FSB, 2MB L2 cache, 1GB DDR2-533 SDRAM, 4200rpm hdd :eek: Intel 945GMS 128MB gfx)
