Leased line VS USB Hard drive

It is funny that some one made the comparrison between using ADSL and going to the far east to download the same data for cheaper.

Well I am doing exactly that in a different way.

I have 17gb of data in Windhoek that I need in Cape Town, we have a 128kb/s link between us and is completely useless trying to copy that data. So I have sent up a USB harddrive and I am copying the data on there and having it sent back.

And think we pay something like R4000 - R6000 a month for this line.

Isnt that completely stupid. Thanks Telkom.

Come to think of it - there is a golden business opurtunity here.

Sort of a DHL company handling only large data transfers. You register on a website and order your package you want for the month (eg 300GB USB drive @ R500 per month or 500GB USB drive @ R1000 per month). You get to hold onto the drive, and call them when you want to transfer data. They then send out a courier to pick up the drive, and for R250 odd then ship it to any location. With four 500GB (2TB) data transfers per month you effectively then only pay R2000. Much cheaper than an equivalent 1024K dedicated leased line circuit costing about R100,000 per month.

Sentechs cheaper, but the performance is much, much worse than a dedicated line, inceredibly so! And the 128kb package has a 10gig soft cap... so how is this helping?
Anyway how about just going to a lan like OC, 200+ pc's every month (bigger than local dc++ hub) all sharing a whole lotta stuff and you've got a 100mb connection, uncapped/shaped. about 24hours worth of download time, thats almost 700GB (ave. 8mb/s download) by my calculations, for R80!

But hey, theres a bad thing to every good thing.

Last time I went i got none! I think they had a problem one time, but if you got A/V protection it should be ok. I wonder when the next one is anyway....
